PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. HARVEY AND JOHN HARVEY, O'F SORANTON, PENNSYLVANIA, TO WILLIAM J. HAND, OF SCRANTON,
SClSSORS-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1905.
Application filed ly 28, 1904. Serial No. 218,566.
States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pair of scissors with our improved sharpener in position upon one of the blades. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the frame of the sharpener. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the frame of the sharpener is formed. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the gib.
1 represents the shears.
The blank from which the frame of the fastener is formed comprises a central portion 3, from each side of which extends ears 4:, adapted to be bent on the dotted line 5 to an upright position at right angles to the central portion 3.
6 is a plate extending from the one end of the central portion 3 of the blank, bent to an angle less than a right angle to the plane of the central portion. 7 is a tongue extending from the other end from the central portion 3 and in the plane thereof, the extreme point of said tongue being reduced to form a screwdriver It is thus that the plate 6 and the file serve as a handle for the screwdriver.
The plate 6 is provided on one of its edges with a recess 8, while its other edge is provided with a recess 9 and a cut-away portion 10, between said recess 9 and the edge of one of the ears 4, for a purpose which will be hereinafter set out.
11 is a gib having suitable arms 12, which extend through the recesses 8 and 9, said arms being provided with inturned ends 13, which pass back of the plate 6, as more clearly shown in Fig. *2. The gib 11 is provided with a central perforation 14., suitably screwthreaded, through which passes a set-screw 15, the inner end of the set-screw impinging against the face of the plate 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. 1
16 is a suitable sharpening medium, which for purposes of illustration is shown as a file secured to the rear face of the plate 6 by means of the gib 11, the inturned portions 13 of the arms 12 of said gib holding the said file firmly against the face of the plate 6 when the said screw 15 is firmly impinging against the face of the plate 6.
In the use of our invention the sharpener is drawn back and forth along the blades of the scissors, and the construction of the sharpener is such that an excellent bearing of the shank or central portion 3 of the sharpener against the side of the blade'is assured. This insures a uniform retention of the angle which the cutting-surface of the file forms on the'cutting edge of the shear-blade.
It is important in sharpening a scissorsblade that the angle at the cutting edge of the blade be uniform throughout. The anle of the file 16 with reference to the under face of the central portion is such that when the central portion 3 is fiat against the inside of the scissors-blade, as shown in Fig. 2, the file is in position to give the cutting edge of the scissorsblade the proper angle, and as a large majority of those called upon to use shears and scissors are of the female sex and as they are not particularly skilled in the sharpening of scissors this feature is of importance.
To facilitate the use of the invention, one may stick the point of the shear-blade into a convenient piece of woodwork, grasp the han dle of the blade firmly, whereupon the operator may exert considerable pressure to hold the blade firmly in one position while rubbing the sharpener back and forth over the blade.
It'will be noted that in the use of this invention it is designed that the shears or scissors be retained in a fixed position while the sharpener is rubbed back and forth over the cutting edge.
It frequently happens that the screw 17, upon which the scissors-blades are pivoted, becomes loosened, in which event the screwdriver extension 7 is a very convenient adjunct to the sharpening device, and at the same time this screw-driver extension forms an increased surface upon which the finger of the operator may rest to assist in pressing the central portion 3 against the blade of the scissors, it being intended that the finger of the operator while using the sharpener be positioned upon the central portion 3 between the lateral ears 1, the point of the finger resting against the lower portion of the plate 6. The cut-away portion 10 in one side of the plate 6 enables the operator to draw the file close into the corner formed at the angle of the blades.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A scissors-sharpener comprising a blank having a central portion, a pair of lateral side ears at an angle to the central portion, and an outwardly-inclined end plate extending from that face of the central portion from which the lateral ears project; and a sharpening medium secured to the inclined end plate and extending beyond the opposite face of the central portion.
2. A scissors-sharpener comprising a blank having a central portion, a pair of lateral side ears at an angle to the central portion, and an outwardly-inclined end plate having a recess on each side and a cut-away portion on one side below the recess and extending from that face of the central portion from which the lateral ears project; a gib fitting in the recesses in the end plate; and a file held by said gib on the outwardly-inclined end plate so as to project from the opposite face of the central 25 plate.
3. In a scissors-sharpener, the combination with a frame comprising a central portion, a tongue in the plane of and integral with said central portion, laterally-extending ears on each side of the central portion, an inclined end plate integral with the front edge of the central portion, each side of the end plate having a recess, a cut-away portion in one of the sides of said plate below said recess, of a gib having hooked ends constructed to pass through the recesses in the side of said plate, a set-screw secured in said gib and impinged against said plate, and afile clamped to said plate by means of the hooked ends of 0 said gib.
The foregoing specification signed this15th day of July, 1904.
