Description
GREEN FE'NTON, OF STREETSBORQ, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 75,255, dated March 10, 1868,
IMPROVEMENT IN HVA'IY-KNIVES.
@La tlgthnle ttfrrth tu in these tvttets lntent zum mailling part ai ligt zum.
TO` ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Beit known that I, GREEN FENTON, of Streetsboro, in the county of Portage, 4and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Hay-Knives, &e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to theA accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. front view of the knife.
Figure 2 is a side view of the saine.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts. t
This implement consists of the handle A and blade B, the former of which is constructed of wood, the lower end having a socket in which the shank of the cutter is inserted, and secured by a pin, a, iig. 2, projected from the end of the spring C, and made to penetrate through the socket iand shank, as shown in g. 2. B, the blade of the implement, is made of steel, and of the shapev shown in the drawing, in which it will be seen that it con- Sists of two flaring wings, D E, provided with a curving cutting-edge, z.
The practical use of this knife is for cutting hay in the stack, and which is done in the following manner: The operator holds the knife by the handle, and places his foot upon the projecting arm b ofthe spring, thereby forcing the blades down into the hay. which, by their peculiar curving character and angle, cut their way down easily at every thrust, making a clean, surooth cut'.
For the greater convenience of grinding the blades, the knife is detached fromthe handle, which is readily done by withdrawing the pin a alluded to. The handle, on detaching the blades, can be conveniently used for other purposes by inserting a hoe, rake, fork, tc.
What I claim a-s my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl The handle A, spring C, pin a, arm c, and blade B, all constructed and arranged in the manner as and for the purpose specified.
GREEN FENTON.
