Description
' E. P. PUTNAM. SUGAR GANE STRIEIER.
No.- 260,709. Patented .July 4; 1882 UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
EMMET P. PUTNAM, OF LA UHINOHE, LOUISIANA.
SUGAR-CANE STRIPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,709, dated July 4, 1882.
Application filed November 10, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMME'r P. PUTNAM, of La Ghinche, in the parish of St. Bernard, and in the State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sugar- Oane Strippers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement which is applicable to choppers or knives used for cutting the sugar-cane.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with a chopping-blade, of an auxiliary blade, both secured to the same handle, the latter or auxiliary blade being so arranged and applied to the handle that it is useful for stripping the leaves from the stalks at one blow, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. of my improved duplex knife. Fig. 2 is a top view, showing a modification of Fig. 1.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a large blade made somewhat like a butchers cleaver, and constructed with a hook, at, on the back of its broadest end, adapted for drawing in and allowing the stalks to be quickly grasped in the hand. The bottom of this blade is sharpened to form a cutting-edge, and its rear or narrower end is suitably secured into the kerf of a handle, B.
U designates a supplemental blade, which is also rigidly secured into the handle B at the top of the blade A, and which may be of the same length as this blade, or shorter, if de sired. The blade 0 is a narrow stripper sharpened along its lower edge, and, if desired, constructed with a hook, b, on the back of its free end. rated from the working portion of the blade A, I prefer to use arivet, b, (shown in Fig. 1,) or 1 may use as a modification of this rivet an angular curve in the blade itself, as shown in the modification, Fig. 2. 1
It will be seen from the above description thatthe duplex knife is usefulfor stripping at one blow the leaves from a cane-stalk.
What I claim as new is- As a new article of manufacture, the canestripperconsisting of the broad hooked cleaver A and the narrow hooked stripping-blade 0, set at an angle and fixed at one end .of the handle B, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 7th day of November, 1881.
EMMET PERKINS PUTNAM.
