M. T. OHANCY. SAW KNIFE. No. 585,157; Patented June 22,1897.
J /NVENTOH W01 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MITCHELL T. OHANCY, OF EDDYVILLE, ILLINOIS ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THEOPHILUS MORSE AND ANDREW-J. NESSELRODT, OF GOLOONDA,
ILLINOIS.
SAW-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,157, dated June 22, 1897. Application filed December 81, 1896. Serial No. 617,668. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MITCHELL T. CHANoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eddyville, in the county of Pope and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Knives; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the class of saws and knives used by butchers and grocerymen in the preparation of meats for market and by butlers and cooks in carving for the family table.
The improvement is embodied in the relative construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described, whereby I produce a simple, compact, cheap, durable, and easilyadjustable saw or knife which is effective for its purpose and embodies these two very necessary utensils in the same framework and handle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved combination saw-knife, showing the blade resting loosely between the pivot centers. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing fulcrum centers and locking device. Fig. 3 shows detail views of pivot-pins and locking device.
The chief parts of my combination sawknife are a framework A, a handle B, a blade 0, having saw and knife edges, respectively, a pivot-pin D, locking devices E F, and the fulcrum-screw G.. The aforesaid blade 0 is preferably tapering in shape, as shown, with a V-shaped cut-away portion in its smaller end to form pointed ends for the saw and knife, but any other desired construction may be used without materially altering the effectiveness of the device.
A represents the framework of my device, which is bent, as shown, to fit closely about the blade, affording protection to the user against injury from the edge not in use and forming supports for its pivoted ends. To this framework is riveted a handle B of the ordinary construction.
The blade 0, which may be made of steel or other suitable material, is provided with a series of teeth of the customary size for meatsaws on one edge, while the opposite edge is sharpened to form a suitable knife-blade.
D represents a pivot-pin which is riveted to the large. end of the blade at the center and has a projecting end which passes through an aperture d in the framework and forms a pivotal bearing for one end of the blade, being securely fastened into position by the thumb-' screw d, which engages in the inner threaded portion of the said pin.
F represents a locking-pin of the construction shown, having a threaded end for the engagement 'of the knob f and a cut-away portion to form a butt for the reception and engagement of the spiral f whose opposite end rests against the butt f formed in the framework, and thus acts to force the lockingbolt into the hole 6 formed in the projecting butts E, which are riveted at the corners of the blade, as shown. A similar butt G is riveted to the opposite end of the blade at the center of the V- shaped notch and serves to protect that portion of the blade and afiords a means for the engagement of the fulcrumscrew g, which is partly threaded for engagement in the correspondingly-threaded portion of the frame at g, and thus forms a pivotbearing for that portion of the blade.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a saw-knife, a reversible blade provided with a pivotal support at each end, two sockets at its inner end, and two points at its outer one, combined with a frame in which the blade is pivoted, and which has its front end turned backwardly in a line with the blade so as to form a support for the front end of the blade in between its two points, and a stop for locking the blade in any desired po sition, and which engages alternately with the sockets, substantially as described.
