SAMUEL W. EASTREN, OF TREMONT, NEW YORK.

I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,936, dated July 11, 1871.

4 To all whom it may concern:

` Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. EAsTREN, of Tremont, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Shears and Button-Hole Cutter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined button-hole cutter and shears, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represent-s a side' view of my device.

A A represent the two blades of an ordinary pair of shears, .pivoted .together at av. These two blades are extended in rear of the pivot-point, forming two other blades, B B, with cutting-edges. At the inner ends of the blades B B are square notches a a, and the adjoining or inner sides of said blades are graduated, as shown, thus form- "ing a convenient cutter for cutting button-holes of any size desired. On the pivot-point vare also placed two arms, C C, each of which forms a ring, D, at its outer end. Each of these rings is, on the side adjoining the blades, provided with a headed pin, b, made to turn as a swivel. In the outer edges of the blades A A and B B are elongated slots i t', through Which the headed pins b b may be inserted, and then turned with the heads across the slots, and thus holding the arms and rings, or, in other words, the handles, to either set of blades, as the one or the other is to be used.

Havingthus fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The shear-blades A A, pivoted together at x, and extended in rear of said pivot-point, forming the graduated blades B B, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. rlhe handles C D C I), pivoted independently on the' same pivot that connects the shea-rblades, and provided with headed swivel-pins b b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The combination of the shear-blades A A, graduated blades B B, handles C D G D, and the headed swivel-pins b b, or other suitable device for attaching' the handles to either set of blades, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
