Be it known that LMARK WILsoN PRINGLE, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Cloud Chief, in the county of lVashita and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cutting Corn and other Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming' a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to corn-knives or to devices for cutting corn, heading, gathering, or harvesting kaffer corn, sorghum, the, and for trimming vines, young trees, and for other and similar purposes, and the object thereof is to provide an effective device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is adapt-ed to be connected with one or both of the hands and to be operated thereby by simply opening and closing the fingers thereof.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a perspective view of my improved corncutter, showing also the connection thereof with the hand and the method of operating the same. i 4

In the practice of my, invention 1 provide a metal plate A, which is preferably triangular in form, but which may be of any desired shape, and which is also concavo-convex in form, and secured to the convex surface thereof is a heavy piece of leather or other flexible material B, which is substantially of the same form, and which is secured thereto by rivets Z), and secured to the plate A and projecting therefrom at right angles thereto and in iongitudinal line therewith is a cuttingplate or blade D, in the outer edge of which is a semicircular cavity or recess (1, which is provided with a cutting edge, and pivotally connected with the inner end of the plate D is a supplemental cutting blade or plate H, which is preferably elliptical in form and that portion of which adjoining the cutting-plate D is provided with a semicircular cavity or recess h, which is provided with a cutting edge, and passing through the plate lLbaclr of said semicircular cavity or recess h,is a fiat bar or plate K, which is secured in the plate H in any de sired manner, and the outer end of the elliptical plate H is provided with a cross pin or bar L,-which is shown in dotted lines and which is also secured to said plate in any desired manner.

Secured to the outer side or back of the flexible piece or plate B is a triangular strip ill, of leather or similar material, to two of the corners of which is connected a strap m, which passes around the hand, the ends of which are unit-ed in any desired manner, and the fingers of the hand are adapted to be passed through the loop or ring thus formed, and connected with the other corner of the triangular strip M, which extends parallel with the fingers and in the direction of the wrist when the device is in position, is a strap or straps m by which the device is connected with the wrist, and this strap or straps m may be provided with a buckle or other fastening device, as will be readily understood, or the flexible piece B may be secured to a strong leather glove, if desired.

The operation will be apparent fromthe foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.

In connecting the device with the hand the fingers of the hand are passed through the loop or ring formed by the strip M and the band an connected therewith, and the strap m is then secured to the wrist, and in securing the device to the hand in this manner the outer end of the elliptical plate H will pass between the second and third fingers, and said fingers will pass between the rods or bars K and L, and the device is operated by simply opening and closing the fingers, as will be readily understood, and the cornstalk, vine, or other article to be cut is inserted between the cutting edges of the segmental or semicircular cavities or recesses formed in the cutting plates or blades D and H, and when the fingers are closed said article will be cut off, as will be readily understood, and this operation may be repeated as rapidly as desired.

It will be observed that the leverage obtained by pivoting the plates D and H in the manner described and by providing the same with semicircular or segmental cutting edges is very great, and the power obtained when the device is operated as herein described is sufficient to cut off any ordinary vine or young sprouts 0r limbs, and also for cutting cornstalks or topping the same, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and one which is comparatively inexpensive.

My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts thereof as herein shown and described, and it is evident that changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing; its advantages, and I reserve the right to make all such changes and modifications as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The cutting device or apparatus herein described, which consists of a plate, means for attaching it to the hand, a cutting-blade secured to said plate and projecting at right angles therefrom, a supplemental plate or blade pivotally connected with the first-mentioned blade and which is adapted to be operated by the fingers of the hand, two bars passing through and connected with said supplemental plate, and between which two of the fingers of the hand are adapted to be passed, each of said cutting-blades having curved or segmental cutting edges substantially as shown and described.

2. Acutting device substantially as herein shown and described, comprising a triangular concave-convex plate A adapted to be secured to the palm of the hand, a heavy piece 01 leather corresponding in form to said plate, and secured thereto, acutting-blade provided with asemicircular or segmental cutting-eavity secured to said plate A, a supplemental cuttingplate II pivotally connected to one end of said blade and provided with a segmental cavity, a plate-bar K secured to said supplemental blade adjacent to the cuttingeavity therein, a cross bar or pin passing through said supplemental blade near the said plate, whereby the same is secured in position, as and for the purpose set forth.
