ROBERT HARDING MGFARLAND, OF REPUBLIC, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DAVID S. ROGERS, OF OLATHE, KANSAS.
CORN-HUSKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1916.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, ROBERT HARDING Mo- FARLAND, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Republic, in the county of Republic and State of Kansas, have inventedcertam new and useful Improvements 1n it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention'relates to certain new and useful improvements in hand corn husking tools and it has for its object the provision of a simple, inexpensive and efficient device of this character in which provision is had for protecting the hand of the operator as well as the material from which the device is made.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which I have shown a perspective view of the device attached to the hand of the operator.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawing by numeral 1 designates a metallic plate of general elliptical form, the lower edge being cut transversely across the plate.
2 is a hook member, bolted or otherwise secured to the central portion of the plate 1, the hook being designed for tearing the husk from the ear of corn.
3 is a straight metallic bar, riveted or otherwise secured transversely across the lower edge of the plate, the end of the bar being beveled or pointed, as shown at 4, the said free end of the bar extending a suflicient distance beyond the end of the plate to per mit the thumb of the operator to bear against it, sis-indicated.
5 is the cuff to which the plate 1 is secured. This cuff is made in two sections and is adapted to be secured to the back of the hand of the operator, while a strap 6, secured to the back of the cuff, provides a loop 7 through which the thumb is passed.
In operation, the ear of corn from which the husk is removed is caught in the hook 2 and a forward movement of the hand of the operator serves to tear the husk from the ear, the rod 3 serving to pierce and open the husk and simultaneously detach the ear from the stalk.
The metallic plate serves to protect the cuff from wear and also protect the hand of the operator from injury.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new is A corn husking implement comprising a plate having curved edge and conforming to the palm of a hand and provided with a straight end, a wrist band fastened to the plate and having afree portion extending beyond one end of the plate, a finger engaging strap fastened to the plate adjacent to its opposite edges and spaced apart from the wrist band, thumb straps secured to the wrist plate and to the finger engaging strap, and a knife fastened to the face of said plate and flush with the straight end thereof.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT HARDING MGFARLAND.
