CORN-HUSKIN G IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed May 11, 1915. Serial No. 27,370.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, R01 E. FERGUSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harlan, in the county of Shelby'and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Husking Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention relates to corn husking implements and has for one object the provision of an implement adapted for use by a right-handed husker. 1
To this end the invention consists in the provision of a palm shield and a thumb shield, each having direct connection with the other and adapted to accommodate the left hand of the husker, the said shields beingadjustable to accommodate hands of different sizes.
Other objects of the invention will more fully appear as the embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specifito the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the device in applied position. Fig. 2 is a side View of Fig. 1, showing the rear side of the adjustable thumb shield. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the knife carrying sleeve removed from the thumb shield, and Fig. 4. is a sectional view of the H of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the palm shield which is formed of a substantially rectangular piece of flexible material, preferably leather, and has formed thereon at direct opposite points a pair of lateral extensions 22 adapted, when the palm shield is positioned on the hand, to engage around the wrist, the said extensions being adjustably and detachably connected to each other by means of straps 33. The palm shield carries a thumb shield 5, the lower portion of which is provided with a flap 6, which flap overlies the palm shield, and the rear portion of the thumb shield is slitted longitudinally as is shown in Fig. 2 to provide the flaps 9, which sleeve taken on the line flaps are adjustably connected to each other by means of a lacing 10, whereby the shield can be adjusted to accommodate thumbs of different sizes.
'The front face of the thumb shield has mounted thereon an arcuate plate 11, which is secured to the shield by means of the rivets 12, one of the side edges of the plate having formed integral therewith a huskin hook 13, which extends laterally and upwardly from the plate and has its upper free end secured in the direction upwardly as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The upper edge of the palm shield is provided with a strap 14, which extends across the front surface of the shield and is secured thereto by means of the rivets 15. This strap has one end passing beneath said flap on the lower portion of the thumb shield and the said ends is adapted to pass between the thumb and the index finger of the hand when the device is applied to the hand and to be adjustably connected by means of a buckle 17 to the opposite end of the strap at a point adja cent the knuckles of the hand. The front faces of the palm shield and the thumb shield are provided with a plurality of protecting rivets 16 so as to preserve the material from wear.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A husking device comprising a palm shield formed of asubstantially rectangular piece of material and having wrist engaging extensions formed thereon, a thumb shield having direct connection with the palm shield, a husking hook carried'by the thumb shield, and a strap extending across the front face of the palm shield and connected thereto and extending beneath a portion of the thumb shield, the said straps being adapted to engage the hand at a point adjacent the knuckles and to extend between the thumb and the index finger of the hand.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROY E. FERGUSON. Vitnesses G. K. SWIFT, LESLIE M. TAYLOR.
