HEADING-KNIFE. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMON TRAVIS WAR- HEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seymour, in the county of Baylor and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headinge Knives; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to knives used for topping corn, Kafir corn, or the like, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a knife of this nature, which has a body portion cut to conform to the shape ofa persons hand, and a transversely extending knife formed upon one end of the body por tion. Another object of this invention is to provide a heading knifeas specified, which has the body portion thereof bent or curved downwardly, for positioning the cutting blade, below the hand engaging body portion and also means for attaching the knife to the hand.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a perspective -view of the improved heading knife, and Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the line 2-2 of'Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the knife, which is constructed of sheet metal and cupped to fit the hand. The body 1 is provided with openings or slots 2 formed there in adjacent its rear end, through which a flexible strap 3 extends. The strap 3 is provided for extending about the wrist of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 23, 1915. Serial No. 23,509.
operator, for holding the rear end of the body plate 1 in firm engagement with the hand.
The plate 1 has a lug 4 formed upon one edge thereof, which extends upwardly therefrom and is provided with a slot 5,through which a flexible strap 6 extends. The strap 6 is adapted for detachable connection to a flexible strap 7 as is shown at 8, which strap is also carried by the body plate 1. The straps 6 and 7 are provided for extending about the operators hand, for attaching the blade portion thereto.
The body 1 is bent downwardly, as is shown at 9, and it has a cutting blade or heading knife 10 formed thereupon and extending transversely thereto. The blade 10 has its inner edge 11 sharpened, for forming a cutting edge, for severing the tops from corn stalks, Kafir corn tops, or the like. The blade 10 is formed of substantially two sections 12 .and 13, which are disposed at an gles to each other, forming a cutting edge 11, a section of which extends at an acute tain minor features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may necessitate alteration, to which the patentee is entitled, provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What is. claimed is 1. In a heading knife, a single piece of metal having a portion thereof cupped to form a support, and a knife integral with said support and positioned substantially at right angles thereto.
2. In a heading knife, a body plate cupped to fit a wearers hand, a flexible strap secured to said body plate for attachment to the wearers hand, an upstanding lug formed upon one edge of said body plate, a flexible strap connected to said upstanding lug, a
Q memes cutting edge of said blade being formed in substantially two sections extending at it oblique angles to each other.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
