ATTORNEYS I I WM N.PETERS. PHOTO-LITHO UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE L. HUSS, OF CLYDE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-HUSKING IMPLEMENTS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,144, dated February 6, 1877; application filed To all whom it may concern:
Be it.known that I, MAURICE L. HUSS, of Ulyde, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hand Corn-Huskers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my hand corn-husker. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of same.
. This invention consists in a device for husking corn by hand, constructed and operated as hereinafter fully set forth.
A designates a leather band, provided with vertical slots at a; B, a thicker and stiffer strap or band of the same material, provided with eyes 12 b in its ends to receive a lacing thong or cord, 0. Said ends of strap B are adapted to pass through slots 0, a, and may be adjusted toward one another by-tightening thong, cord, or lace C. When thus joined together said straps or bands A and B constitute a broad ring, adapted to set around a persons finger, and adjustable to the size thereof. A, being broader and more flexible, is'arranged on the back of said finger, while B is located on the inside thereof. 0n the outside of strap B is secured by rivets a metal plate, d, which is made in one piece, with a husking-hook, D. If preferred, a small strap and buckle may be substituted for the lace and eyes above described.
Various other changes may be made with- October 14, 1876.
out departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
When in use, the above-described leather husking-ring is placed upon the middle finger of the right hand. The ear of corn is then held by the tip in the left hand, and grasped about the middle by the right hand, so as to make hook D penetrate the husk, said hook being turned toward the wrist. The right hand is then drawn toward the operators body, so as to rip open the husk and enable theleft hand to gather the husk at one side of the point of the ear. The right hand then grasps the ear independently of the husk, and, by moving the hands apart, the husk is detached from the ear.
This husking device may be used on either finger of either hand. it may also be worn over a glove, if desired. It can be used satisfactorily if all the fingers but one on one hand have been lost; but if the normal number of fingers be present it does not prevent any of them from assisting in the work.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the finger strap B, provided with the metallic hook D, and an adjusting-cord, of the slotted shield-strap A, interposed between the cord and the finger when in use, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MAURICE L. HUSS.
