CHARLES F. ZIMMERMAN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEVI JERSEY.
SHEARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Feb. 6, 1917.
Original application filed January 25, 1912, Serial No. 673,289. Divided and this application filed April 23, 1913. Serial No. 762,990.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GI-IARLns F. ZIMMER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Jersey City, county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shears for cutting sheet metal or the like and has for its object to n-ovide a simple and el'licient shears which can. be easily manipulated and by means of which a powerful leverage can be applied to the blades or jaws to effect the cutting action.
A further object of my improvement is to provide a shears in which the blades have a relative sliding movement to effect a true shearing out, which shears comprise comparatively few parts, light in weight, and compact in form and in which one of the blades is removable and replaceable when necessary or desirable.
My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claim.
The present application is a division of one filed by me in the United States Patent Oflice on or about January 25, 1912, Serial Number 673,289.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved shears in its closed position and Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the shears in open position.
Referring to the drawings, the shears comprise a main handle consisting of a member A, constructed of steel or any other suitable material and terminating at one end in a finger loop 13 and at its other end in a blade C. A second converse blade D is provided with a slot E and is pivotally and slidably secured to the member A by means of a screw or similar element F which passes through the slot E and screws into the member A. An auxiliary handle comprising a member G terminating at one end in a finger loop H is pivotally connected at I with the member A and has a portion extending beyond the pivot I and beyond the blade G and forming an angularly disposed projection the free end of which is pivotally connected at U with the blade D.
When the finger loops B and H are moved toward and away from each other, the members A and G will be rocked on the pivot I and will cause the blades C and D to similarly move toward and away from each other, the blade D .at the same time being given a sliding movement relatively to the blade G, the extent of said sliding movement being determined by the length of the slot E. In this manner the blade D is not only given a rocking movement relatively to the blade C, but is also moved lengthwise relatively thereto so that a true shearing action of the blades is eHected in a manner which will. be readily understood and which augments the efliciency of the cutting blades. In other words an initial movement of the handle H will move the blade I) toward the front end of the shears and will bring the cutting edges of the two blades C and D into substantial parallelism. A continued movement of the handle H will cause the blade D to move toward the blade 0, both cutting edges remaining substantially parallel during this latter movement and being consequently effective throughout their entire length during the entire actual cutting operation. With this construction a very powerful leverage is obtained, which permits of the cutting of tough and resistant materials and at the same time an extremely clean cut it secured, regardless of the material being operated upon, which material is firmly gripped by the blades at the commencement of the actual cutting operation against any wedging forward as the blades come together.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Special features of my shears will be found in the interchangeability of the cutting blades so that the shears, as such, need not be idle during the time that one of the dull blades is being resharpened and the fact that the work is gripped at once as soon as the shear blades touch it at opposite sides,
thereby preventing any sliding of the work along the edges of the blades. Either the slot E or the shoulder K, or the shoulder L, indicated in the dotted lines, or any two or all three together, or some additional means may be employed to limit the position of the blades in the closed condition.
I claim:
A shears comprising a main handle, a
blade formed integrally therewith and having a straight cutting edge, an auxiliary handle, a pivot located in close proximity to the inner end of the cutting edge of said integral blade and pivotally connecting said auxiliary handle to said main handle, a sec ond blade having a straight cutting edge, an integral member extending rearwardly from said second blade and provided with a slot, a second pivot extending through said slot whereby said second blade is pivotally and slidably connected with said main handle, said second pivot being located entirely below an imaginary line forming a continuation of the cutting edge of said integral blade, a projection on said auxiliary handle extending beyond the first and second pivots and a pivot located below said second pivot in all positions of the shears whereby said projection is pivotally connected to said sec ond blade and moves the latter from an open position, first forwardly relatively to said integral blade to bring the cutting edges of said blades into a parallel position without exerting any appreciable cutting action and then to ard said integral blade to effect a chopping cut.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
