Description

May 18, 1954 w. D. wmsLow SAFETY RAZOR ADAPTER Filed Feb. 10. 1949 I INVENTIOR. M D. WIN$LON Patented May 18, 1954 UNITED STATES FATENT OFFICE SAFETY RAZOR ADAPTER William D. Winslow, Vineland, N. J. Application February 10, 1949, Serial No. 75,689
2 Claims. 1
N This invention relates generally to safety razors of the type which employ double-edged blades, it being among the principal objects of the present invention to provide means which adapt the razor head to be angularly adjusted ineither one of two positions so that it may be operated upon either a pull or push stroke as may, be most convenient to the person using the razor. i
Moreparticularly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive adapter for a conventional doubleedged blade type of safety razor which is designed to pivotally support the razor head in either one of two adjusted positions, the head being held in either adjusted position by the hand of the person'usingthe razor and being instantly convertible from one to the other of its adjusted positions without necessitating the use of any special resetting devices or-tools.
Other ,objects and advantages of the present invention will appear more fully hereinafter, it beingunderstood that the present invention consists substantially in the combination, construction, location and relative arrangement of parts, alias described in detail hereinafter, as shown in the accompanying drawings and as finally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings-- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the razor with its head heldin adjusted position for a push stroke the h n b d U Figure 2 is a perspective View showing the razor with its head held adjusted position for a pull stroke;
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the razor with parts thereof shown in section;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the razor head and the adapter of the present invention associated therewith;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the adapter per se; and
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view of the adapter as taken on the line 66 of Figure 5.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will be observed that the present invention is embodied in a safety razor of conventional type having a blade supporting head It and a handle I I, the head including a pair of cooperating clamp members I2 and I3 which are adapted to clampingly secure therebetween a double edged wafer type of blade of conventional construction. In this conventional type of razor the blade clamping member I2 is provided with an externally threaded stud [4 adapted to be received in an internally threaded recess I5 suitably provided in the upper end of the handle I I, it being apparent that when the stud is securely threaded into the handle the clamping members I2 and I3 are drawn tightly together to securely clamp the shaving blade therebetween with the shaving head rigidly fixed with respect to the handle.
In accordance with the present invention, an adapter unit, designated generally by the reference numeral I6, is so disposed operatively between the shaving head I2 and its handle ll as to permit the head to be swung into either one of the two operative positions respectively shown in Figures 1 and 2. With the shaving head swung into its position as shown in Figure l the razor is adapted to be operated on a push stroke, as by pushing it upward on the side of the face, while when the razor head is swung into its position as shown in Figure 2 it may be operated on a pull stroke, as by pulling it downwardly on the side of the face, in which latter case either edge of the blade may be employed.
As appears most clearly in Figures 3 to 6, inclusive, the adapter I 5 of the present invention comprises a, yoke member Il having a U-shaped body portion I8 terminating in a depending externally threaded stud I9, in association with an upper member 20 which is pivotally mounted betweenthe laterally spaced parallel side arms of the yoke member by a transversely extending pivot pin or bolt 2I. The pivoted upper member 20 of the adapter is provided with an internally threaded socket 22 into which is adapted to be threaded the stud M of the shaving head, the depending threaded stud I9 of the adapter being in turn adapted to be threaded into the threaded recess I 5 in the upper end of the razor handle I I.
It will be apparent that when the razor head and handle are respectively threaded on to opposite ends of the adapter I1 the razor head is capable of being swung relatively to the handle I9 about the axis of the pivot pin 2|, the threaded connections between the razor head and the adapter being such that when the head with the shaving blade mounted therein is securely threaded on to the pivoted supporting member 20, the opposite shaving edges of the blade both extending parallel to the axis of the pivot pin 2|.
In order to instantly swing the head into one or the other of its two operative positions respectively shown in Figures 1 and 2, the: pivoted member 20 of the adapter is provided at one side thereof with a depending extension 23 of a length thereof L U sufiicient to project below the base of the U- shaped member i8 and overlie the upper end of the razor handle I l, the extension being adapted for ready engagement by the thumb or fcrefinger of the hand of theperson holding the razor during the shaving operation. It will be apparent that the extension when in engagement with the base of the yoke member ll, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, serves to limit the permissible swing of the razor head about the pivot pin 2! in one direction, while engagement of the upper member 29 with the opposite edge of the yoke 57 as shown in Figure 1 limits perrmissible swing of the razor in the opposite direction.
When it is desired during use of the razor to operate it on a push str is merely necessary to press the thumb or fore iger of the hand upwardly against the extension 23, as shown in Figure 1 whereupon the razor head is securely held in position with s shaving adapted to be pushed upwardl the side of the face. On the other hand, when it desired to operate the razor on a null stroke, the extension 23 is pressed by forefinger of the hand holding the razor e against the upper end of the handle 5! so as to securely maintain the razor head in position to permit either of the shaving edges of the blade to be pulled downwardly along 1e side of the face or other sur-. face of the body to be shaved.
It will be understood that adapter ll of the present invention may be manufactured and sold as an accessory adapted to be employed in connection with conventional safety r zors having a head which is threadedly secured to a bandle H in accordance with conventional principles to thereby modify such conventional razor and permit it to be operated for either push or pull stroke as hereinbefore adapter may be incorporated in the upper end of the handle H as a built-in component part It will be understood alsorthat the present invention is susceptible to various changes and modifications which may be made from time to time without departing from the general principles or real spirit thereof and it is accordingly intended to clann the same broadly, as well as specifically, as indicated in the ap pended claims.
What is claimed as new and useful is:
1. An adapter for insertion between the head assembly and handle of a safety razor, said adapter comprising a pair of members adapted to be fixedly secured, respectively, to said head described, or the assembly and handle, one of said members being providedwith a bifurcated end portion and the other of said members being provided with an portion engaging between said furcation, means for pivotally connecting said end portions for bodily swinging movement of said head assembly 'from a position wherein it is disposed in conventional relation to said handle for pullstroke shaving to a position wherein it is disposed to one side of said handle for push-stroke shaving, and a rigid element integral with the one of members proximate said head assembly, said element being disposed in longitudinal continuation of said one member on the side of said pivot remote from said head assembly for securement of the latter in either of the aforesaid positions by the application of finger pressure on said element. 7
2. An adapter for insertion between the head assembly and handle of a safety razor, said adapter comprising a yoke member threadedly engageable inthe end ofisaid handle, a supporting member threadedly. engageable with said head assembly, means for pivotally mounting said supporting member in said yoke member for bodily swinging movement of said head assembly from a position wherein it is disposed in conventional relation to said handle for pullstrolre' shaving to a position wherein it is dis to one side of said handle for push-stroke shaving, and a rigid element integral with said suppor ing member, said element being disposed in longitudinal continuation of said supporting member on the 'side of said pivot remote from said head. assembly for securement of the latter in either of the aforesaid positions by the application of finger pressure on said element.
