COMBINATION POCKETKNIFE AND FOUNTAIN -PE1\T HOLDER.
Application filed December 5, 1922.
Z '0 aw whom it may. concern.
Be it known that 1, ROBERT lV. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at lvaupumin the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Combina.
tion Pocketknife and Fountain-Pen Holder,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates. to a combination folding fountain-pen, knife, and toilet article holder and is designed for the purpose of providing an article which will contain or embody within a small compass, various articles which are often required by a business or professional man or woman. One of the objects of this invention is the provision of a folding fountain pen which may be readily folded into or unfolded for writing position from a compact carrying case and is further designed with the View toward combining within that case, a penknife and a card-case, all so arranged that the entire combination may be carried in so small a space as a vest pocket or pocket-book.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the inside of the case with the pen unfolded therefrom; Fig. 2 is a perspective of the case with the pen folded therein and the rear hinged plate in open position;
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the case wlth the pen folded therein and blades of the knife opened;
Fig. 4 is a rear plan View of-the case with all the parts in folded position;
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are views of details of construction 5 Fig. 8 is a rear plan view of a modified form of the case; and
Fig. 9 is a transverse section as seen on the line 99 of Fig. 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawings by numerals of reference, the case or carrier is designated generally at 2, and comprises a preferably rectangular and oblong hard rubber plate 3, which, for puroses of ornamentation, may be faced upon either side adjacent the edges running in the direction of the length of the plate with silver or gold fanciful form strips 4 suitably secured in position.
vVhile it is desirable that the plate which forms the case should be as thin as possible, it is of such thickness as will provide a longitudinal recess in one edge to accommo- Serial No. 664,998.
date penknife 6 the blades of which are shown at 8 and a nail file blade at 10, the blades being secured by rivets 11.
One face of the plate 3 is provided with a central longitudinal cavity or recess 12 for the purpose of receiving afountain pen 1 1, and to the shape of which latter, the said recess 12 conforms. Hinged by a spring hinge 15 to an extension 16 on one end of the plate 3, and the sides of which extension converge to the point of the hinge 15, is a thimble 18 internally threaded at 19 and flattened on its opposite end as at 20 to form one of the elements of said hinge. The hinge is of such construction that the plate '8 and fountain pen 1 1 may swing away from one another thru an arc of only 180 sov that when unfolded the said pen and plate are in alinement; and to avoid the pen collapsing accidentally on its hinge, I provide a small pivoted hinge bridging bar 22. The upper end of the pen 1% is pro vided with a threaded terminal 2 1 which is adapted to be screwed into the threaded portion of the thimble 18.
Hinged at what, for purposes of description, will be called the back of the plate or case by a normally opening spring hinge 25, is an oblong plate 26, said plate 26 being provided on its inner face with a mirror 28.
It is perfectly obvious that in lieu of a mirror, the recess in'which it is set may be utilized as a card carrier or even a powder puff, and I may state that with no change material to the spirit of this invention, it could readily be modified to contain such articles as usually carried in a ladies vanity case. A catch 29 is employed for securing the hinged plate against accidental opening, and the outer face of the plate, which is usually formed of gold or silver, may be suitably ornamented or may have engraved thereon, the name or initials of the owner of the article as I have shown at 30.
In lieu of a plate 26 hinged on the back of the case, I may provide merely a pocketfor cards, this being formed of a rectangular metal band 32 secured upon one side to the back of said case as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings. 2
For the purpose of maintaining the fountain pen, which should be of the self-filling variety, in folded position, I provide a spring cap 83 which is adapted to engage the barrel of the pen adjacent the nib or point, said cap being provided With an eye recess, an article carried thereby, and hinged means at the opposite end of said plate to secure said article in said longitudinal recess. 7 I v I V 2; A device of the class" described coinprising a plate provided With a plurality of. recesses therein, one of said recesses being extended longitudinally of one face of said plate, a' hinged receiving member carried" at the one end of said plate in longitudinal alinement With the last mentioned recess,'.an' article removably carried in said receiving member, means for retaining said" meniber and article carried thereby in extended longitudinal aline'ment with respect to saidplate and additional means at theopposite' end of plate for'securing said member and article 111' sald longltudin'al recess.
3. A device of the class described comprising a plate provided with recesses, one of said recesses being extended longitudinally of one face of said plate, a hinged article receiving thimble carried atone end of said plate adapted to be received in a portion of said last-mentioned recess, and a spring-hinged retaining cap carried at the opposite end of said plateadapted to engage the article carried by said'thimble to retain the; same in longitudinal recess,
4'. A device of the class described comprising a plate provided vvith a plurality of recesses, one or recesses beingformed in one face of the plate and extended longitudinally thereof, a} hinged article-receivingthinible carried at one end of said plateand adapted to bejreceived in a portion of said last-mentionedrecess", means fon retaining said thinible' in extendedposition with respect 'to" said plate, and a sprir' g-hinged retaining cap carried the opposite end of said plate adapted to engage the article carried by, s'aid-thimb'le to retain the same in theaforesa'id long-itiidinal' recess. b ,p
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
