COMB-CURLER Filed Feb. 27, 1941 grwwvfop ZZz'avzfi Jazzy,
Patented May 2%, 1941 rant 1 Claim.
This invention relates to combination combcurlers of the collapsible type suitable for carrying in womens vanity bags or purses.
An important object of my .invention is to provide a comb-curler of simple, strong and economical construction in which the curler is adapted to slide along the upper marginal edge of the comb from a collapsed position covering the top of the comb to an extended position projecting from one end of the comb.
Another object of my invention is to provide a comb-curler of the above character which is so constructed and arranged as to occupy a comparatively small space in a vanity bag or purse, and which when extended for use is not liable to accidentally collapse, which is an objection to comb-curlers of the folding type.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a comb-curler showing the curler in retracted position;
Figure 2 is a side view of the comb-curler showing the curler in extended position;
Figure 3 is a vertical cross section through the curler taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Figure 4 is a vertical cross section through the comb-curler taken on the line 44 of Fig 2.
Referring to the comb-curler shown in the drawing, I designates a pocket comb of conventional construction, made for example of hard rubber or composition material, and having a straight upper edge 2. Extending parallel to the upper edge of the comb is a guide slot 3 cut entirely through the comb, this slot terminating spaced distances inwardly of the comb.
Associated with the comb I is a longitudinally tapered curler 4 made of light gauge sheet metal or other suitable material rolled to shape. As best indicated in Fig. 3, the sheet metal blank from which the curler is made is bent into generally circular cross-section, the two adjacent edges of the blank being separated by a space forming a recess 5 slightly exceeding the thickness of the comb. The curler is somewhat shorter in length than the comb, and at its larger end is provided with an integral sheet metal extension 6 by which the curler is slidably connected to the comb. This extension is formed to provide a pair of spring arms I frictionally engaging opposite sides of the comb, and a bridge section 8 overlying the upper edge of the comb and connecting the upper ends of the arms.
The lower ends of the arms are toed in to provide keys 9 slidably engaging the guide slot 3 in the comb. The bridge section 8 is provided ends of the with an indentation Ill designed to snap into corresponding depressions I00, suitably located in the upper edge of the comb to impositively retain the curler in either its extended or retracted positions. A pin it extends through the slot 3 and connects the arms I to hold them against separation.
When not in use the comb-curler will occupy the position illustrated in Fig. 1 with the curler retracted to cover the upper edge of the comb, thereby reducing the amount of space required for carrying this accessory about in a Womans handbag or purse. After the hair has been combed and the curler is ready to be used, the latter is slid along the comb with the keys 9 guided within the slot 3 until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 2. While the hair is being curled about the curler, it is firmly held against shifting inwardly by means of the detent it! and also by the finger of the user, whose hand encircles the comb as a. handle for manipulating the curler.
Because it is capable of being cheaply manu factured by quantity production methods, it readily lends itself for use as an advertising souvenir, and when used for such purpose, the advertising matter may be carried upon the sides of the comb, or upon the curler, or upon both.
It should be understood that it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact details of construction herein shown and described, for obvious modifications within the scope of the claim may occur to persons skilled in the art.
I claim:
A comb-curler comprising a comb having a straight upper edge, a guide slot extending parallel to the upper edge of the comb and termina ing short of the ends of the comb, a curler associated with said comb, said curler being of a length not substantially exceeding the length of the comb and composed of sheet material rolled to shape, the curler being longitudinally tapered and of approximately circular transverse cross-section throughout its length, a recess extending substantially throughout the length of the curler and of a width such as to receive the upper edge of the comb, an extension from the enlarged end of the curler comprising a pair of arms overlying opposite faces of the comb and having inturned ends engaging the guide slot, and means for retaining the arms against separation, said comb-curler being so constructed and arranged as to permit the curler to be slid longitudinally along the upper edge of the comb into and out of extended position from one end of the comb.
