Description

W. A. WYMAN COMBINATION COMB AND INSTRUMENT CASE Filed May 17, 1957 June 28,1938.
11v VENTOR a/fe/A an BY I A rrozazvz y Patented June 2 8, 1938 greases ,ZZJZb 1 Walter a. Wyman, hos .dngeles, tialit. Application y 17, rear, Serial No. Matte This invention relates to a combination pocket comb and an instrument case. The case or housing provided within the comb is more particularly intended to contain manicuring impla- 5 ments to be used in conjunction with the comb as anaid to maintaining the neatnms and tidiness of the person using the device. However, if desirable, other small articles or implements may be housed within the comb.
m It is a great convenience, particularly to travel- 7,
ing salesmen, clerks and other persons who, while away from home are especially desirous of maintaining a neat personal appearancato have at F hand a combination toilet artlcle oi'the kind to which this invention pertains.
Among the objects of the invention are to iur-.
nish a combination toilet article of the above stated character which is an improvement over other toilet sets in respect to lowered cost of manuiacture, simplicity of construction, convenienceof using, and in other particulars, as will herein-- after appear. Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates what is at present deemed to be a pre- 1 ierred embodimentof the invention,
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal mid section of the device on line i--i of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof on line 2-2 of Fi 1. s
w Referring in detail to the drawing, the comb the end portions of said passage.
body it, desirably made of hard rubber, is of an elongated, flattened character and is furnished along one edge with the row of comb teeth ll,
shown integral with said body.
Within the comb body it is encased an openended, flattened, tubular member it, which, as
shown, may have in its central portion an isthmus or contracted part it. In the drawing a finger nail file It and a pair of tweezers iii are shown,
each of these instruments being almost entirely housed within the casing provided for them within the comb. v
A valuable feature of the metal lining l2. having the contracted portion or isthmus I3 is that when a sharply pointed instrument of considerable length is inserted into an end portion of said-lining the point of such instrument may extend beyond said isthmus without beingblunted by contact with any part of the metal lining. The inserted instruments shown in Fig. 1 also are held in a centered position within the lining 12 bymeans of the inwardly bowed members of the pair of spring blades l 8 located within each ll outer end portion of the housing formed by said (@i. Ebb-=79) lining it, thus keeping their edges as well as their points away from the metal lining."
When the comb body is made of rubber or "bakelite and the metallic tubular member i2 is vulcanized or otherwise secured therewithin, a a light, strongly reinforced structure results.
At each end of the tube it a concavity lidis shown ii each side to aid the operator in gripping between thumb and finger the manually withdrawable instrument desired. W
A pair of spring blades it is secured to both outer edges of the tube l2, and extend into said tube with the inner ends of the pairs ofspring blades bearing yieldlngly together to trictiy hold instruments pressed therebetween in. said 15 tube. v
I I claim:
l. A device of the kind .descrimd having an elongated body portion consisting oi an outer part of a relatively dense material and a tubular mein- 2% her. of a flattened character and of denser, more resistant metallic sheet material embedded within said body and extending from end to end thereof,
said tubular member being open at each end, there being a passage therethrough from end to 25 end thereof, and diametrically opposed inwardly directed metallic spring members secured to said metallic sheet material adjacent to each end oi said passage and positioned to yieldingly grip between them elongated implements inserted into t0 2. A device or the kind described having an elongated body of relatively hard, firm material less resistant than metal, and a flattened tubular member of sheet metal embedded within said body and extendinglong'itudinally thereof, said tubular member having anisthmus in its midlength adapted to admit and to protect the point of an elongated pointed instrument housed within said tubular member.
3. A device-oi the kind described having an elongated body portion consisting of an outer part of a relatively dense material and a tubular member of a flattened character and of denser,
I more resistant metallic sheet material embedded 45 within-said body and extending from end to end passage, said spring members consisting of pairs of resilient, convex blades having their convexl6 ities directed toward each other, the members of each pair extending-longitudinally of said sage.
4. A device of the kind described including a. tubular member having an open end, and opposed inwardly directed spring members mounted adjacent to said open end, said spring members consisting of a pair of resilient, convex blades having their convexities directed toward each other, said blades extending longitudinally of said tubular member, and being positioned to grip inserted elongated implements between them.
masses 5. A devloe of the kind described having an elongated body of relatively hard, firm material less resistant than metal, and a flattened tubular member of sheet metal embedded within said body and extending longitudinally thereof, said tubular member having an isthmus adapted to admit and to protect the point of an elongated pointed instrument housed within said tubular member.
