H. L. PAYsoN COMBINATION TOILET ARTICLE Filed Dec. 21, 1936 Aug. 8, 1939.
Patented Ang. 8,
"umren STATES PATENT omes- My invention relates to toilet 'articles and par-'- ticularly to a combination .article comprising aA comb and a nail file.
One object of my invention i'sto provide a coml 5 bination toilet article comprising a comb and a nail ille, which may be carried in the pocket or in a purse.
A second object is to provide a combination I the file rotated through 180 degrees to-'a 'subarticle oi' this character in which the comb and l the nail ille are independent elements independently operative.
My invention consists in a comb and a nail iile movably secured thereto, and when not in use, protected thereby.
In'the accompanying specification and the drawing forming a part thereof, I have described and illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, together withl a modification, but I do -not conne myself to these disclosures, as other 0 modiilcations. may be made without departing from the scope -of the appended claim.
In the drawing,
Fig.`1 is a side elevation, partly in section of the preferred embodiment. l
25 Il'ig. 2 is a sectional end elevation, on line 2--2,
Fig. 3 isa side elevation, partly in section, of a modified form. t Fig. 4 is a sectional end elevation on line #-4, 30 Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing,
The comb lIl is channeled at Il in thecomb back I2. Within this channel is movably secured, the nail ille II, the lips it limiting the 35 channel. serving to housel the nail ille when not operative.
In Figs. y1 and 2,V this iile is pivoted at I5 and the ille is notched at Il to `facilitate swinging the ille on its pivot, the contiguous lip being cut o away at II to permit engagement oi the finger nail with the notch in the ille.
The spring I8 extending from the leai l! se-4 cured in the channel by suitable means here shown by rivets 3l, is formed with the detent 2l, engaging either notch 2l or 22,l according as the ille is in operative or inoperative position.
The ille may be rotated on its pivot through 90 degrees from inoperative to operative position. the detent 2l being shown in engagement with u the notch 2| on thefile edge.
As .the ille is rotated to operativeposition relaiile, with said notches.
tive to the comb, the detent will engage the notch 22, the detent being so formed that it will be 'depressed when the iile is swung, and engage the edge and at the operative position, the notch 22.
In the drawing Fig. 1, the channel is shown as closed, and the ille in operative position is limited in rotation by such clospre, but this is notan essential feature, as the channel may be open and stitute operative position the detent engaging a 10 corresponding notch similar in form to the notch 22.
In the modication, Figs; 3 and 4, similar 'references with a prime sign are used to de,-l
scribe the construction. 16
In this form, the nail le I3' 'is slldable in the channel Il'. One lip H' is formed with the spline at 2l, and projections 24 from the ille are formed to engage this spline to retain the ille in the chango nel. An extension of the ille at 25 is adapted to abut the contiguous end of the spring leaf I9' to positively limit the movement outwardly whenl used, the detent 20', engaging the notches 2I',' 22' to yieldingly retain the le in operative or 25 inoperative position as the case may be. In Fig. 3 the iile vis shown in inoperative position with detent 20 in engagement with the notch 2l'. The ille is slldable to operative position shown in dots. by means of the notch Il', at which point ,o the detent engages the notch 22', the projections `2l engaging the channel 2l to insure rectilinear movement.
'In the drawing the embodiments are both shown with the nail ille encased within the comb back, the operatlveposition being indicated by broken lines at YIla in Figs. l and 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
-In a toilet article comprising a body member formed with a channel, a nail ille hinged within o the channel having notches formed in its edge, radial with said axis, and corresponding to the operative and inoperative positions of the ille and operative to swing from the channel to operative ment formed with a detent adapted to yieldingly engage. normal with the axis of rotation oi the now'snn 1.-.
