Description

Dec. 2, 1930. J. T. SCULLY 4 HANDLE FOR TOOLS Filed Dec. 6, 1927.
INVENTOR I 01 1. J. M
Patented Dec. 2, 1930 JOHN T. SCULLY, OF YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE r03 VTOOLS Application filed December 6, 1927. Serial No. 238,120.
This invention relates to improvements in handles for holding tools and has especial reference to handles for holding cutlery tools, an object of the invention being to provide a tool handle which embodies means for housing a blade of a knife, so that the latter.
will be at all times handy for use.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a tool handle which includes means for housing a button hook, a pair of scissors, a nail file or other'finger nail instruments.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tool handle which in addition to uses already recitedhas means for housing a stick for coloring or medi'cating the lips of a person.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a tool handle which has means for housing a lead pencil or other element,
all these features being incorporated in a body compact and of graceful design.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to
be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In my co-pending application Serial Number 104,964, dated April 27, 1926, I show a fountain pen cap having a'longitudinal slot disposed tangentially to the wall of the bore of the cap and a pivotally mounted knife blade housed in said slot. This cap, while acting as a cap for a fountain pen, also serves as a handle for a tool. I now desire to disclose variations of this principle.-
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective View illustrating the invention. I
Figure 2 is an elevation of the handle with parts broken away and shown in section.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 show ing a tool, a button hook, in closed position.
Figure 4 is an elevation ofthe handle with a tool, a button hook in closed position.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is an elevation of the handle as Figure 7 is an elevation of a stick for coloring or medicating the lips of a person. 7
Figure 8' is an elevation of my invention with side Walls broken away to show housing means for the'lipstick and pencil. Referring tothe drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 1 iiidicates the body of the handle which has a plurality of slots 2, 2a, 21; disposed longitudinallyj The bodyl is preferably of cylindrioal shape, and may be of any suitable ma terial and of any other suitable shape. 111 the body 1 the longitudinally extending slots 2, 2a,. 2?), etc., are provided with pivotally 65 'mounted tools: a buttonrhook .7, a pairpof scissors 7a,.a nail file 76, mounted as shown by: pins5.: The slots2,.2a, 2?), etc. may extend' parallel with the center. longitudinal line of the bore '14 of the handle, or may be disposed at a slight inclination with respect to said *bore. 7
Located within the slots 2, 2a, 2?) etc. are springs 8 having their inner ends secured by pins 6. The outer free ends of the springs 3 are receivable within a notch in the tool tangs 4 and are arranged to bear against the tangs 4 so as to yieldingly hold the latter in either open or closed positions as shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings. One edge of the slots 2,201, 2?), etc. may be provided with a notch 15 for convenience in opening the tool- The slots 2, 20. etc. may be parallel to the wall of the bore, parallel to a tangent to the wall of the bore or they may be of any suitable slantwise direction.
In one end of the body of the handle 1 and extending intothe bore 14 is a stick 9 (Fig. 8) for personal lip use which is mounted in a ferrule 8 having threads 11 to engage threads provided in the bore of the handle 1.
p In Figure 8 I show the housing means for the lipstick 9 which is in closedposition in the bore 14. The members 9 and 10, a pencil, are shown primarily for illustrative purposes; it being observed that I may employ other members in their stead such as, for instance, a bottle for perfume and a stopper therefor. While I do not show a removable cap'to cover the tool slots and the tools to hide them from sight, I hold that to be a minor detail and within the scope of the invention.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention What is claimed is 1. A handle for tools including a longitudinal body having a longitudinal bore therein, and, formed in the marginal Wall of said bore, at least one longitudinally disposed tool receiving slot having its inner Wall disposed at right angles or substantially so to radii of said bore.
:2. A handle for tools including a longitudinal body having therein a longitudinal bore, and, formed in the marginal Wall of said bore a plurality of longitudinally disposed tool receiving slots having their inner Walls disposed at right angles or substantially so to radii of said bore, tools carried in the slots and means in the slots whereby said tools may be held in open or closed position.
3. A handle for tools including a longitudinal body having therein a longitudinal bore, and, formed in the marginal Wall of said bore, a. plurality of longitudinally disposed tool receiving slots having their inner walls disposed at right angles or substantially so to radii of said bore, a. file carried in one of the slots and means associated therewith Whereby said file may be held in open or closed position.
In testimony whereof I afiixmy signature.
JOHN T. SGULLY.
