Description

March 26, 1957 M. ROLLAND ALLEN WRENCH HOLDER Filed Aug. 15, 1955 FIG. 2.
FIG. 3.
INVENTOR JOHN M ROLL/1ND United States Patent Oflice Patented Mar. 26, 1957 ALLEN WRENCH HOLDER John M. Rolland, Chicago, Ill.
Application August 15, 1955, Serial No. 528,416
1 Claim. (Cl. 31-71) This invention relates to Allen wrench holders.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a holder which is adapted to hold a plurality of Allen wrenches of varying sizes which may be selectively opened or closed in the manner of a jack knife and which includes an adjustable chuck for holding the smallest size Allen wrenches.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an Allen wrench holder of the above type which is a more compact holder and assembly than has heretofore been possible.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide an Allen wrench holder having the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in use.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an Allen wrench holder embodying the features of the present invention and showing the chuck and one of the wrenches in operative position with the remaining wrenches folded against the handle;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, 1t represents a hollow cylindrical handle having three equiangularly spaced elongated slots 11 extending from end to end thereof. The hollow handle is integrally formed with the end closures 12 and 13.
An Allen wrench 13' of hexagonal cross section is pivotally mounted at one end in the opposite ends of each of the slots 11 by means of the pins 14 to permit the movement in and out of the slots 11, as shown in Fig. 1.
The handle 10 adjacent the slots 11 is provided with the recessed portions 15 to facilitate the opening and closing of the wrenches, as will be obvious.
In order to retain the wrenches 13' in either the open or closed positions, a frame 16 of triangular cross section (Fig. 2) is mounted within the hollow handle 10 and fixedly mounts on each face thereof an elongated spring 17 which bears on the wrenches. Thus, the tension of the spring 17 will serve to retain the wrenches in either the open or closed position, the wrenches being of varying cross sectional area.
In the further practice of my invention, one of the slots 11 at one end is provided with a chuck handle 18 pivotally mounted therewithin by means of the pin 14, the free end of which rotatably mounts the chuck jaw member 19 by means of the lock screw 20 whereby the angular position of the chuck jaw member 19 relative to the handle 18 may be adjusted and locked. The chuck jaw member 19 is externally threaded and has screwed thereon the chuck head 21 having the externally knurled portion 22. The chuck 19, 21 will be employed for holding relatively small sized Allen wrenches which may be carried inside the handle 10 for such purposes.
When not in use, the wrenches 13 and chuck may be folded into the respective slots 11 to provide a compact cylindrical unit which may be carried in the pocket of the user, two wrenches being foldable into each of the slots, as shown in Fig. 1.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
An Allen wrench holder comprising a hollow, cylindrical member having a plurality of equi-angularly spaced slots extending from end to end thereof, a plurality of Allen wrenches of varying sizes, two of said wrenches being pivotally mounted at the opposite ends of each of said slots and foldable therewithin and outwardly at right angles thereto, and spring means for retaining said wrenches in either the operative or inoperative position, said spring means comprising a triangular frame mounted within said hollow handle, and an elongated spring secured to said frame within each of said slots adapted to bear on said wrenches adapted to retain the same in either an open or closed position.
