BARIL Patented June 22 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims. (Cl. Iii-444) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a squeegee mounting.
More specifically, the present invention proposes a novel means for removably and adjustably mounting a squeegee member on the end of 1 an elongated handle or pole in a manner so that the squeegee member can be quickly removed from the pole for use independent thereof or so that the angular position of the squeegee member relative to the pole can beadjusted for convenient use on inaccessible portions of windows and the like surfaces.
Another object of the present invention proposes adjustably mounting the squeegee member on a block in turn adapted to be received between i the jaws of a manually operable clamp fixed on the end of the elongated pole so that by the mere act of opening the clamp the squeegee member can be removed from the end of the pole.
Still further, the present invention proposes meet the requirements of a particular cleaning job which is being done.
As a still further object, the present invention proposes the provision of a novel means for holding the plate in the desired turned position relative to the block in a manner to maintain the desired angularly adjusted position of the squeegee member.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a squeegee mounting of the type disclosed which is simple and durable, which is effective for its intended purposes and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description. and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The squeegee mounting, according to the present invention, includes an elongated pole l6 preferably formed of wood, but which may be formed of metal or a synthetic resinous material if de sired. Fixedly mounted on the one end of the pole I0, there is a manually operable normally closed clamp l I. The clamp I I consists of a fixed jaw i2 and a movable or openable jaw I3; each preferably formed of a non-corrosive metal.
The fixed jaw I2 has a pair of spaced ears it fitted at their free ends between a pair of like cars It extended from the movable jaw IS. The ears it and 15 are pierced by a single pivot rivet l6 so that the movable jaw l3 can be moved rel ative to the fixed jaw I2. The fixed jaw i2 is formed with a pair of laterally extended wings bent to form a tubular portion I 7 into which one end of the pole Ill is snugly fitted.
The clamp It is secured to the end of the pole I0 by means of a screw I8 which is inserted through an aperture formed in the tubular portion l1 and threaded into the handle ill, see par-- ticularly Fig. 7. The movable jaw is has a handle portion l9 extended along one side of the tubular portion I 7 so that by squeezing the handle portion I9- toward the tubular portion H, the j jaws I2 and I3 of the clamp I I will be opened.
Resilient means is provided for rigidly maintaining the jaws I2 and H3 in the closed position shown in Figs. 1, 2, 6 and 7. The resilient means comprises a spring 20 coiled about the pivot rivet it between the ears I4 and I5 and which has one end portion 20 extended along the inner face of the fixed jaw l2 immediately adjacent the tubular portion I'I, into a groove Ill formed in the upper end of the pole Ill. The other end portion 26 of the spring extends along the inner face of the handle portion Iii of the movable I3. The end portions 26 and 20 of the spring 28 exert an outward force to maintain the jaws l2 and I3 in a closed positionv Provided for being gripped between the jaws i 2 and I3 of the clamp N, there is a block 2! preferably formed of wood. The block 2| is preferably of truncated, isosceles triangular formation, being slightly flattened at its apex as shown in Fig. 4. The block 2i has opposed fiat sides, as
best shown in Fig. 5. Forming the block 2| as a truncated isosceles triangle especially adapts the block to be securely gripped between the jaws i2 and IS.
The block 2| is of a thickness corresponding to the width of the jaws l2 and i3.
Positioned against one side of the block 2|, there is a large plate 22 and positioned against the other side of the block there is a smaller plate 23. The large plate 22 is shaped to have a large portion'thereof extend beyond the fiattened apex of the block 2| and has the free outer edge portion 22 angled slightly out of the plane of the plate and toward the longitudinal axis of the pole It. Secured to that angled outer edge portion 22 of the plate 22, there is an elongated squeegee member 24 having the usual flexible rubber blade 25. The squeegee member 24 is secured to the plate 22 by several screws 2% so that by removal. of the screws the squeegee member 2-2 can be replaced when necessary.
The smaller plate 23 is also of truncated, isosceles triangular formation but of a peripheral size just slightly greater than the peripheral size of the block 2|. The smaller plate 23 is positioned concentrically against its respective side of the blocl: 2! to have flanges 23 extended beyond the sides and base of the triangularly shaped I block 2|.
The plate 22 is pivotally attached to the block 2| so as to turn together with the squeegee member 24 on an axis extended at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the pole IE3. The pivotal mounting is accomplished by means of a pivot pin 2'5 which is passed through the smaller plate 23, the block 2! and the larger plate 22 at its end remote from its free edge portion 22 The smaller plate 23 is held against pivotal movement with relation to the block 2| by means of a brad 28, see Figs. 4 and 5, inserted through an aperture formed in the smaller plate and hammered into the block 2|.
Thus, it is appreciated that the larger plate 22 can be pivoted about the pivot pin 22' relative to the block 2i and the smaller plate to adjust the angular position of the squeegee member 25' with relation to the longitudinal axis of the pole l2.
Means is provided. for holding the plate 22 in desired turned positions relative to the block 2| for in turn holding the squeegee member 22 in the desired adjusted position relative to the longitudinal axis of the pole lb. The holding means comprises a strip of non-corrosive metal 29 which is bent about the periphery of the block 2| to have its end portions 29 extended parallelly beyond the truncated apex of the block. In-
serted between the adjacent faces of the parallel end portions 29 there is an elongated locking strip 35 The locking strip 38 is positioned between the end portions 29*? with its length extended at right angles to the plane of the plate 22 and is formed intermediate of its ends with an elongated slot 3 i. A rivet 32 is passed through the end portions 2i? and the slot 3| retaining the inner faces of the end portions in frictional contact with the sides of the locking strip 32. The elongated slot 3| permits the locking strip 33 to be moved longitudinally relative to the end portions 29 of the strip 25 with the frictional contact between the inner faces of the end portions 29 and the sides of the locking strip 32 functioning to hold the locking strip 38 in the position to which it is moved. To further inhandle portion 19 is relaxed so that the spring 20 can restore the jaws I2 and E2 to their closed" crease that frictional contact, the locking strip 30 is formed of a fibre material.
The end of the locking strip 38, remote from the plate 22, is formed with a hole 33 for facilitating gripping that end of the locking strip, 3|! for pulling it out and for pushing it in.
The locking strip 39, as best shown in Fig. 5, is of a width so that with the rivet 32 passing through the elongated slot 3!, one longitudinal edge of the strip rides on the truncated apex of the block 2|. That engagement of the one longitudinal edge of the locking strip 3!! with the truncated apex of the block 2| serves to retain the locking strip 30 against pivotal movements about the rivet 32 restricting its movement to longitudinalsliding movements only.
The plate 22 is formed with a number of elongated slots 34 dimensioned to receive the end of the locking strip 3% remote from its ends having the hole 33. The slots 32 are arranged on an arc concentric with the pivot rivet 2? to be separately aligned with the end of the locking strip 38 in the several turned positions of the plate 22. The slots 34 have their lengths radiating from the axis of the pivot pin 2? to be aligned with the width of the locking strip 35 as the plate 22 is turned bringing the slots individually into alignment with the locking strip 36.
When the end of the locking strip, 30, remote from its end having the hole 33, is inserted through one of the slots 34, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 and by the full lines of Fig. 5, the plate 22 and the squeegee member Ml will be held in one adjusted position relative to the axis of the pole l0. On the other hand, when the locking strip 3!} is pulled longitudinally outward to the position shown by the dot and dash lines 32" on Fig. 5, the end of the locking strip 32 is disengaged from the slot 34 of the plate 22 leaving the plate 22 together with the squeegee member 2 5 free to be turned as a unit on the axis of the pivot pin 27. When the desired angular position of the squeegee member 24 is reached, another of the slots 32 is aligned with the end of the locking strip Bil and the locking strip is pushed back to its starting position.
The end of the locking strip 32 then enters the slot 342 which is now aligned with the locking strip to hold the squeegee member in its newly adjusted position.
In positioning the block 2! between the jaws i2 and it of the clamp ii, the jaws are first opened by squeezing the handle portion ls toward the tubular portion ill. The block 25 is then inserted between the jaws l2 and 53 with the base thereof foremost bringing the sides of the block into position between the jaws. The block 2|, as previously indicated, is of a thickness corresponding to the width of the material forming the jaws so that the longitudinal side edges of the jaws l2 and i3 will engage the inner faces of the larger plate 22 and the inner faces of the flanges 23 of the smaller plate 23. Thus,
the block 2| will be held against any possible shifting movements between the jaws E2 and I 3 of the clamp The engagement of the strip of metal 29 about the periphery of the block 2| provides solid surfaces for engagement by the jaws |2and [3 of the clamp.
It is, thus, apparent that the construction of the present invention provides a novel arrangement whereby the angular position of the squeegee member 24 can be adjusted with relation to the end of the pole III to facilitate wiping of any normally inaccessible right and left vertical side edges of windows and the like surfaces. At the same time, the squeegee member 24, by opening the clamp II, can be quickly and easily detached from the end of the pole for use independently of the pole.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the kind described, means to removably and adjustably mount a squeegee on the end of a pole, comprising a manually openable clamp fixed on the end of the pole, a block removably held by said clamp, a plate pivotally mounted on one side of said block to turn on an axis extended at right angles to the pole, a squeegee member mounted on said plate, and means for holding said plate in desired turned positions relative to said block for varying the angular position of said squeegee member relative to the axis of said pole, said plate being larger than said block and having a free end portion projected beyond said block and angled toward the longitudinal axis of said pole and upon which said squeegee member is removably mounted, a second plate positioned against the other side of said block, said pivotal mounting of said first plate comprising a pivot pin engaged through said first plate, said block and said second plate, and means holding said second plate against pivoting relative to said block.
2. In a device of the kind described, means to removably and adjustably mount a squeegee on the end of a pole, comprising a manually openable clamp fixed on the end of the pole, a block removably held by said clamp, a plate pivotally mounted on one side of said block to turn on an axis extended at right angles to the pole, a squeegee member mounted on said plate, and means for holding said plate in desired turned positions relative to said block for varying the angular position of said squeegee member relative to the axis of said pole, said plate being larger than said block and having a free end portion projected beyond said block and angled toward the longitudinal axis of said pole and upon which said squeegee member is removably mounted, a second plate positioned against the other side of said block, said pivotal mounting of said first plate comprising a pivot pin engaged through said first plate, said block and said second plate, and means holding said second plate against pivoting relative to said block, said second plate being of a peripheral size slightly greater than the peripheral size of said block to have flanges extended beyond the periphery of said block, said clamp having opposed jaws resiliently urged together, said jaws being of a width corresponding to the thickness of said block to have their opposed longitudinal edges engage the inner face of said first plate and the inner faces of the flanges of said second plate ill to hold the block against lateral movement relative to said clamp.
3. In a device of the kind described, means to removably and adjustably mount a squeegee on the end of a pole, comprising a manually openable clamp fixed on the end of the pole, a block removably held by said clamp, a plate pivotally mounted on one side of said block to turn on an axis extended at right angles to the pole, a squeegee member mounted on said plate, and means for holding said plate in desired turned positions relative to said block for varying the angular position of said squeegee member relative to the axis of said pole, said holding means comprising a locking strip slidably mounted on said block to slide toward and away from said plate, said plate having spaced slots arranged on are concentric with its pivot axis and into which said locking strip can be selectively engaged for holding said plate in the desired turned positions relative to said block, said slidably mounting of said locking strip comprising a metallic strip wrapped around said block to have parallel end portions extended away from said block, said locking strip being inserted between said parallel end portion and having an elongated longitudinally extended slot, and a rivet inserted through said end portions and passing throughsaid elongated slot so that said locking strip can be shifted longitudinally within the limits of said slot.

In a device of the kind described, means to removably and adjustably mount a squeegee on the end of a pole, comprising a manually openable clamp fixed on the end of the pole, a block removably held by said clamp, a plate pivotally mounted on one side of said block to turn on an axis extended at right angles to the pole, a squeegee member mounted on said plate, and means for holding said plate in desired turned positions relative to said block for varying the angular position of said squeegee member relative to the axis of said pole, said holding means comprising a locking strip slidably mounted on said block to slide toward and away from said plate, said plate having spaced slots arranged on are concentric with its pivot axis and into which said locking strip can be selectively engaged for holding said plate in the desired turned positions relative to said block, said slidably mounting of said locking strip comprising a metallic strip wrapped around said block to have parallel end portions extended away from said block, said locking strip being inserted between said parallel end portion and having an elongated longitudinally extended slot, and a rivet inserted through said end portions and passing through said elongated slot so that said locking strip can be shifted longitudinally within the limits of said slot, said locking strip being of a width to have one longitudinal side in engagement with the adjacent side of said block to hold said locking strip against pivotal movements about said rivet.
