Description

I JOHN N. VALLEY & JOHN A. STET SON, Jr.
Improvement in Scrubbing Brushes mhtesses 2%7JM Patented Oct. 24,1871,
UNITED. STATES FFICE.
PATENT JOHN N. VALLEY AND JOHN A. STETSON, Jlt, OF NORTH EAST, PENNSYLVANIA.
. IMPROVEMENT IN SCRUBBING-BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Palent No. 120,350, dated October 24, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN N. VALLEY and JOHN A. STErsoN, Jr., of North East, in the county of Erie and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrubbing-Brush; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and ex act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjustable handle for scrubbing-brushes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention ap j ertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig.2 a transverse vertical section of our brush and adjustable handie.
A represents a metallic socket attached to and set at an angle from the center of a metallic plate, B, and into which socket the handle 0 is secured.
' The plate B is circular, and provided with a series of holes, 22 i, at equal distances from the center. On the upper side of the brush E is secured an annular plate, D, constructed as shown in Fig.
1, so as to have a groove under and around its inner edge. This annular plate with its groove is of such a size that the plate B will fit in said groove and be held by the plate D to the brush. On one side is attached a spring, G, the end of which will catch in one of the holes 1' on the plate B, and thus hold said plate with its socket A and handle 0 firmly in position on the brush.
By means of the adjustable plate or flange B the handle may be turned to any desired position or angle, so as to use the brush endwise, sidewise, or diagonally.
Having thus fully described our invention,wh at we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described scrubbing-brush, consisting of the head E with suitable brushes or rubbers, or both, the circular plate D forming an annular groove, the perforated plate B having a handle-socket, A, and the spring G, all as shown and described. In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 7th day of September, 1871.
