N. L. POST.
Improvement in Link Guide for Coupling Cars.
Patented Feb. 20, I872.
YYVitnesses: @fm /kg UNITED STATES NATHAN L. POST, OF EAST CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LINK-GUIDES FOR COUPLING CARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,930, dated February 20, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, NATHAN L. Pos'r, of East Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Link-Guide for Coupling Cars; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a device of rubber, metal, or other suitable material to be permanently attached to the ordinary railroadcar coupling-link and extending outside of the bumpers far enough to form a handle, by which the link can be adjusted without endangering the hand of the operator.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a link with my device made of rubber attached to it, and Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the device made of metal.
Arepresents aplate or piece of rubber, metal, or other suitable material, having a slot, a,cut in it large enough for the passage of the ordinary coupling-link C. At the ends of the cut a are made holes for the link to rest in, and the plate or piece A may be secured to the link at about the center by any suitable means. The plate or piece A is large enough to extend outside of the bumpers and forms handles B B, so that the operator may thereby be enabled to handle or adjust the link Without endangering his hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The link-holder A, made of rubber or other elastic material, having holes for the link-arms and a slot between them for the admission of the link by the elasticity of the parts, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of November, 1871.
NATHAN L. POST.
