Description

AM, PHorainwosnAFH/c co. r1.1( oseafawes mangas) UNITED. STATES OLIVIER LAFRENIERE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,714, dated July S, 1873; application led December 30, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVIER LAFRENIERE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a transverse section of this invention in the plane a: a, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, partly in section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in combining with a horse-collar a metallic hook-shaped rim, which is fastened to the covering of the collar by rivets or other' suitable means, and
' which serves to retain the haines in such a manner that the hames can be readily attached to or detached from the collar, and
that by means of the metallic rim the collar is enabled to retain its shape, and at the same time the construction of the collar is materially simplified.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of a horse-collar, on which is secured a metallic rim, B. This rim is hook-shaped, as shown in Fig. l of the drawing, and it is secured to the body of the collar by means of rivets a which extend through the ends of the covering of the body, as shown, said ends to extend upon the outer surface of the rim. If desired, however, other means might be used for connecting my metallic rim to the body. Said rim is made, by preference, in two sections, which are connected at their lower ends by a hingejoint, b, so that the collar, when complete, can be readily passed over the head of a horse. A strap, c, or any other suitable device, serves to secure the upper ends of the body of the collar together after the` vsame has been adjusted on the neck of a horse. An additional covering, d, conceals the covering of the body and the joint between the saine and the rim B, and imparts the proper finish to the collar.
My metallic rim can be readily and easily manufactured from sheet metal, it is light and durable, and it serves to retain the hames so that the same can be readily attached to or detached from the collar, which is of great convenience, particularly if the collar is used for two horse teams. Furthermore, by the application of the metallic rim the shape of the collar is preserved for a long time, and a collar is obtained which is cheap in the manufacture, convenient in its application, and of superior lightness and durability.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe metallic haniesretaining rim B applied to and connected with the body A of a horse collar, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
OLIVIER LAFRENIERE.
