COMBINED BREAST-COLLAR AND SWEAT-PAD. I
EEPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,743, dated November 11, 1884.
Application filed August 6, 1884. (No model.)
To 60 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THERON BOARDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Breast-0ollar and Sweat-Pads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harness for draft-animals employed in drawing heavy loads, such as canal-boats, &c. Its object is to render the harness easier for such horses while at work; and it consists in certain improvements in the breast-collar and sweat pads and their connection with the hame-collar, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter shown by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the breastcollar sweatpad and a hame collar to which it is connected. Fig. 2, represents a side elevation of a combined breast-collar and sweatpads.
In the said drawings, a represents the breastcollar. It is provided with the extensionpieces a a, which form the sweat-pads. They are made of two or more thicknesses of leather filled in with hair, wool, or other similar material, which makes them soft and yielding, so as to form a kind of cushion against the breast and shoulders of the animal. These sweatpads are combined with and are formed as a part of the breast-collar.
a represents the hame-collar. It is made in the usual way, and is connected with the sweat-pads and breast-collar by the straps a a and thumb screws 0 0. so as to be readily attached or detached. The extension sweatpads of the breast-collar extend far enough to surround the neck of the horse and fit partly within the hame-collar, to which it is secured so that both work in harmony together. The manner of attaching it to the horse and connecting it with the tugs or traces is in the ordinary way and well known, and therefore requires no further description here.
I claim as my invention- 1. A breast collar having the extension sweat-pads a a formed in one piece with it, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of the combined breastcollar and sweat pads, the hame collar, and the thumb-screws for securing them together, substantially as described.
THERON BOARDMAN.
