Description

H. W. & c. F. WHITNEY.
HORSE-COLLAR.
Patented Apr13,1877.
ATTUBNEYS.
UNITE STATES HEZEKIAH W. WHITNEY AND CHARLES F. WHITNEY, OF OSWEGO, N. Y. i
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,163, dated April 3, 1877; application tiled A February 3, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that we, HEZEKIAH W. WHIT- NEY, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, and CHARLES F. WHIT- NEY, of the same place, have invented a new and Improved Horse-Collar, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved horse-collar. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a portion of one side of the collar in section, on line a.' a; in Fig. 2. Figs. 4, 5,6, and 7 represent the parts of which the collar is formed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention consists in a horse-collar made from parts ot' peculiar form, secured togethel` by means of rivets and stitching, so as to form a durable and comfortable collar.
In the drawing, A is the face of the pad, or part of the collar that comes into contact with the horses breast, which lis cut in the form shown in Fig. 6, having convex outer edge a b and the curved inner edge f e, having a central convex portion, c d, and the concave portions d e and of. The ends of the part A are cut diagonally to tit the other portions of the collar to which it is attached. B is the part forming the external or convex portion of the pad, which is attached to the part A by means of rivets, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The edges of the part B overlap the part A. A Wear-piece, g, (shown in dotted lines in Figs. l and 2,) is secured to the inner surface of the part B by the seam-rivets, and.
by the rivets h h. C is a roll, formed of a piece ot' leather having parallel edges, as shown in Fig. 4. One of the edges of the part forming the roll C is attached to the edge oi the part B by rivets, as shown att in Figs. l and 3, the part C overlapping the part B. Th inner edge of the part C overlaps the part .4* to which it is secured by stitching. Tl threads of the stitching extend through t' opposite edge ot' the part C, and draw the ner and outer surfaces ot' the collar togethe. forming a crease, j, for receiving the haines, and the crease k, for relieving the pressure on the breast of the horse and preventing galt ing. A at surface is formed at m for relieving the horses breast from pressure. This surface is quilted to prevent it from becoming convex. D is the neck-piece, that is retained in place by straps L l. The upper ends of the sides of the collar are provided with a strap and buckle for holding them together.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of face A, having inner convexity c d and concavities d e c f, the part B, overlapping face A, and the roll C, having parallel edges, one stitched to part A and the other riveted to part B, as and for the purpose speci tied.
