UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
CHARLES R. STANHOPE, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,590, dated August 12, 1879; application filed June 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHARLES R. STANHOPE, of Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is'a detail View of a belly-band to which a part of my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a bellyband and martingale to which my improvement has been applied.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved means for connecting the bellyband or girth and the martingale of a harness, the use of which will allow them to be disconnected without unbuckling the belly-band or girth, and which will prevent the horse from being chafed by the martingale interposed between the belly-band or girth and his body.
The invention consists in the combination of the ring, the snap-hook, and the flap with the belly-band or girth, and the martingale of a harness, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the belly-band, and B the martingale of a harness, which are made in the usual way.
To the center of the belly-band A is secured by a leather loop, or other suitable means, a ring, 0, to receive a snaphook, D, through the eye of which is buckled the martingale B, so that the said martingale can be lengthened or shortened, as may be required.
With this construction the martingale B is attached to and detached from the belly-band or girth A by springing the hook D into and out of the ring 0 without disturbing the bellyband or girth.
To the belly-band or girth A is attached a flap, E, which comes between the ring and snap-hook O D and the body of the horse, and thus prevents the horse from being chafed by the said ring and snap-hook.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the ring 0, the snaphook D, and the flap E with the belly-band or girth A and the martingale B, substantially as herein shown and described.
CHAS. RIDER STANHOPE.
