Description
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN NAOK, or HUDSON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLARS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,935; dated August 27, 1872.
Specification describing Improvements in Horse-Collars, invented by JOHN NAOK, of Hudson, in the county of Columbia and State of New York.
My invention relates to the construction and arrangement of a horse-collar and hames, by which means the collar and hames are made together with the convenient devices for the attachment of the traces, lines, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing with letters of reference marked thereon forming a part of this specification, in which the figure represents a rear view of a device with attachments which embody my invention.
The wood collar is formed by taking a square piece of timber, of sufficient length and size, and sawing the same from end to end edgewise, making the material for two collars, one of which is then steamed and bent over a col lar-block-flat side to the topand the inside is then worked out to fit the horses neck and fastened at the top by suitable fastenin gs, thus forming the wooden collar in one single piece.
A represents the lower part, B the center, and G the upper part,of my improved collar, being constructed to fit the breast and neck of the horse, and which, being inverted, will easily slip over the head of the horse. The collar is made of wood, being steamed and bent in proper shape, and the inside lined with any suitable or convenient lining so as not to hurt the neck and breast of the horse. D represents a ring, attached to the collar by clip and stud E F. G represents a clip, to which the trace-tugs are attached, said clip being supported by the lug J to give additional strength to the same; or, for light draft, the clip may be made in the form shown by H, by which the traces may be attached directly to the clip without the use of the trace-tug K. represents a clip, which may be used on the inside when a double harness is used, to which the rein-rin g L may be attached by the strap M. By this construction a very simple, strong,
and efficient device is furnished, having the v collar and hames all in one piece, with suitable attachments for either double or single driving, or for light or heavy draft, being a saving in both trouble and expense.
I am aware that collars have been before cut out of wood in the required shape. Therefore I do not broadly claim a wooden collar; but,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a horse-' collar formed of a single piece of wood, bent substantially as described, united at the top and covered with leather, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The wooden collar A B 0 provided with the clip G and lug or supporting-brace J, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
JOHN NAOK.
