Description

J. STAN'LE Y.
BRIDLE-BIT.
Patented Dec. 28,1875.
N PEYERS. FHOTO-LITNOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON n UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES STANLEY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRlDLE=-B|TS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,587, dated December 28,1875; application filed December 7, 1875.
The nature and object of this invention are to furnish a bit for horses, having the flanges or cheek-pieces at the ends attached and secured thereto, and also that the ordinary cheek-pieces and bit may be so constructed that the latter may be removed from the former and attached thereto at pleasure, or vice versa, and my improved bit and cheek-pieces combined substituted therefor or combined therewith, as may be desired, the whole being cheap and substantial, easy and comfortable in a horses mouth, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
The accompanying drawing fully illustrates the nature and character of my invention, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a bit for horses combining my improvements, in which the bit is removable from the cheek-pieces. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a bit in a modified form, in which the cheek-pieces are removable from the bit; and Fig. 3 is a plan View of a rubber mouth-piece and cheek -pieces combined, all as contemplated in my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the several figures.
In carrying out my invention, I, in the first place, as illustrated in Fig. 3, construct a tubular bit or mouth-piece, A, and cheek-pieces B, combined therewith and forming one piece, from india-rubber, gutta-percha, leather, celluloid, or metal, though preferably of the former, because of its being more flexible, and, being tubular, designed and adapted to be adjusted upon a metal. bit, 0, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, or used independently, as occasion may require. In the latter case a bit of leather may be inserted in the tubular bit, and the reins attached thereto.
In order to facilitate the adjusting and removing of my improved mouth-piece and cheek-pieces combined upon or from a metal bit, I, in the second place, construct the latter so as to be adjustable, as shownand indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, so that by removing one of the cheek-pieces B or the bit 0, as the case may be, the tubular bit and cheek-pieces combined may be adjusted upon or removed from said bit at pleasure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is I 1. A bit for horses composed of a tubular mouth-piece and cheek-pieces combined therewith, and forming one solid piece, substantially as and for the purposes set forth and described.
2. A tubular mouth-piece and cheek-pieces combined, in combination with an adjustable bit, substantially as and for the purposes set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix hereto my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES STANLEY.
