Description

UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
HENRY E. MCCORMAO, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
HORSE- CHECK.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,529, dated January 4:, 1898. Application filed m 9,1896. Serial r 598,617. (N6 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY E. MCCORMAC, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Checks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bridles, and more especially to a certain attachment therefor to prevent the horse from choking and curbing his head inward and also serving to prevent lugging.
This invention contemplates the construction of the attachment by which it is supported from the ordinary bridle and bears against the neck of the animal, presenting a frame comprising a forward yoke having a cross-piece or bit and a rear adjustable yoke which fits the neck of the animal to bear against the muscles in such a manner as not to interfere with his breathing.
To the above ends my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangements of the parts which make up the device, the following specification giving a detailed description, and whatI consider to be the novel features are specially recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and in which like numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the views, Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective viewof the attachment detached. Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional View further illustrating the adjustable feature of the device.
. Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the forward yoke of the attachment, which presents the side members 2 2 diverging from their connection with the rearwardly-extending shank 3, the side mem bers 2 2 being given an ogee curve and the outer ends connected to each other bya crossbar or bit 4. At the outer ends of the side members and above the cross-bar or bit are provided slots 5, in which are fastened the nose-band and checkrein, which assist in holding the attachment in place in connection with an ordinary bridle. Numeral 6 designates the other part or the rear yoke of the attachment, which presents a U shaped metal plate or yoke 7, the ends of which are flared outward, the said yoke being connected to or formed integral with the tube 8, within which the shank 3 of the forward yoke passes, and the parts being securely held, when adjusted upon each other, by means of a thumb-screw 9, which passes through a threaded aperture in the enlarged outer end of the tube 8. Big idly secured to the tube Sis a metal strap 10, the upwardly-projecting ends of which diverge and are bent to provide for rigidly securing them to the throat-latch of the ordinary bridle.
In the application of my invention the crossbar or bit 4 is placed in the animals mouth with the regular bit of the bridle, and the rear yoke is adjusted to allow the horses head to be in a comfortable position, the curved ends of said rear yoke bearingupon the muscles of the animals neck, so as not to interfere with his breathing, while the device is practically wholly supported from the bridle, as the forward end, in addition to the bit, is supported by means of the nose-band and checkrein, which pass through the slots 5 therein, while the rear yoke is attached to the throat-latch.
This device will prevent choking and lugging and forms a very simple but efiective attachment for bridles.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An attachment for the purposes set forth comprising a forward yoke having a cross-bar or bit which fits within the mouth of the animal, and held in place by means of the noseband and checkrein fastened into slots in said yoke, and a rear yoke adjustable upon the forward yoke, the adjustment being secured by means of a thumb-screw, and presenting a U-shaped yoke or plate, and a metal strap connecting the device tothe throat-latch of the bridle, substantially as shown and described.
2. An attachment for the purposes set forth comprisinga forward yoke having a cross-bar or bit and slots for holding the nose-band and checkrein of thebridle, andaiearwardlyprothe throat-latch of the bridle, the forward jecting shank, a tube carrying a rear yoke or yoke being secured to the nose-band of the U-shaped plate, the shank of the forward bridle substantially as shown and described. 10
yoke sliding within the tube, a thumb-screw HENRY E. MOCORMAO. 5 passing through the forward end of saidtube Witnesses:
for securing the adjustment, and a metal JOE. S. DAVIS,
strap secured to said tube and connected with ED W. ARNOLD.
