SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,76*?, dated April 11, 1899. Application filed March ll, 1898. Serial No. 673,535. (No model.)
To @ZZ-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PERGY HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cadwallader, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Unchecking Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in unchecking and checking devices for harnesses, and especially to a simple means whereby the unchecking and checking` may be effected easily by simply throwing a strap which is secured at one end to one ofl the reins over an upturned portion of the locking or checking device which is attached to the saddle of the harness, 4whereby the strap will allow the horse to lower its head for any purpose.
More specifically, the invention resides in the securing to the saddle of the harness a flattened shell which is longitudinally apertured and has a contracted portion whereby the unchecking device, with a stop secured thereto, may pass freely through the wider portion of the aperture when it is desired to allow the horse to lower its head, but so arranged that when the strap secured to the checkrein is thrown into the contracted part of the shell the stop will strike against they edge of the shell and be held securely from passing into the aperture, a suitable attachment being provided to guide the strap in whichever portion of the shell it is desired the strap held.
A further part of the present invention consists of the provision of an integral upturned portion of the apertured shell, which guides the strap connected at one end tothe drivingrein, while its other end is connected to the check-strap.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists, fur-4 ther, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically deiined in the appended claims.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which* Figure l is a perspective view of the unchecking and checking device shown as checked up. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, showing in dotted lines the position of the strap when thrown to one side of the shell, as in the act of unchecking the device. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the device. /I is a section on line/I4 of Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the saddle of the harness, which is to be secured in the usual manner to the back-pad of a har* ness. Secured to the saddle is the shell B, which is fastened to the saddle by means of the stud and nut, as shown. This shell tapers toward its forward end and is apertured longitudinally, as seen at C, and has a conltracted portion D, formed by casting or otherwise, forming a part of the upperl wall of said shell thicker, as at C3, than that portion of the wall indicated at C4, as clearly seen in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The contracted portion of the aperture is substantially oi' awidth to allow the strap F.,without a stop thereon, to pass freely through the same,while the broadened portion of the aperture will allow the strap to pass freely through and also the stop F, which is secured to the strap. That portion of the shell on which the strap rests is extended, as at H, beyond the opening into the shell and has an upturned. projection or guide K. It will be noted that the edge of the shell against which the stop4 strikes when the strap carrying the stop is in the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings is at rightangles to the adjacent edge of the shell and parallel to the flattened end of the stop, so that as the stop comes in contact with the end of the shell it will strike squarely against the saine, and the strap can pass no arth er. The said strap E, which carries the stop F, is secured to the button M, which is mounted on a plate M", which plate may be sewed or otherwise fastened to the driving-rein O at any convenient location, while the other end of .the strap E is buckled to the checkrein in the usual manner.

In checking up the horse the strap E is drawn through the widened portion of the shell, as is also the stop secured to the strap, and when the stop passes through the aperture the rein may be manipulated so as to throw the strap E over on the opposite side of the portion K, and as the strap is drawn forward the stop will strike against the edge of the shell at the end of the contracted portion thereof and the strap held from forward move- The extended portion of the shell, as
' seen at H, forms a rest for the strap, so that the latter is always held in a horizontal position or the stop at right angles to the margin of the shell at the opening into the aperture. v
l. In a checking and unchecking device for harnesses, a shell secured tothe saddle, which shell has a contracted portion, a checkstrap, a stop secured to said strap, an .upturned portion of the shell forming a guide to hold the strap in a checked or unchecked relation, as set forth.
2L In a checking and unchecking device, the shell with contracted portion at one side of its longitudinal median line, the stop and strap carrying same, an extension of the shell, outside of the opening therein, on which said strap rests, and an integral upturned guide at the end of the extension, as set forth.
In a checking and unchecking device, the attened shell with edges tapering toward its forward end, a portion of the upper wall of the shell being thickened, thus forming a contracted space on one side of the longitudinal line of the shell, the strap, the stop thereon, and upturned guide designed to hold said strap in either the contracted or wide space in the shell, -as shown and described.
