GUIDE-REIN TERRET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,193, dated September 14, 1ss0..

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TRISTRAM S. LEWIS, of Saco, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Guide-Rein Terret; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my invention as seen from the side next the driver. Fig. 2 represents a portion of the guide-rein of a harness with the attached ball. Fig. 3 is an edge view of my invention.

The object of my invention is to provide means by which the driver of a horse may check or uncheck the animal without leaving his seat in the carriage, and also to prevent the horse from throwing his head from side to side.

The whole device is made adjustable, so that it may be varied as needed to adapt it to horses of difi'erent sizes and having also different habits of carrying their heads.

By the use of my invention the horse is also prevented from turning on too small a circle, thus saving the wheels from being cramped or crushed under the carriage, which is now often done by the use of the ordinary appliances for guiding and turning the horse.

My invention consists of the ball-sockets A, located below the open space 0 of the guiderein terrets upon the saddle of the harness. These sockets should have their months on the side of the terret toward the driver, and

I find it enhances the case of working to make the metal of the terret below the mouth of the socket inclined upwardly an dinwardl y toward the mouth of the socket.

Upon each driving-rein, a short distance behind the terretwhen the horses head isthrown up, are fixed the bulbs B. I find it most convenient to make these bulbs B in two parts, the dividing-line being parallel with the rein, the edges of the two parts being dovetailed to fit into and correspond each with the other, and one of the parts of the bulb being properly tapped for the purpose, a'small set-screw is put in, which, being set up with its point pressing against the rein, keeps the bulb in place and its parts together, the position of the bulb on the rein being determined as hereinafter described.

The operation of my invention is as follows:

The terrcts being in their ordinary position on the saddle, the mouths of the ball-sockets being toward the driver, the bulbs B are affixed to the driving-reins at that point, so that when the horse attempts to put his head lower than desired the bulb B will engage in the sockets A and the dropping of the head will be checked.

In case the horse attempts to throw his head to either side the bulb on the rein opposite to the side to which the head is thrown will. en-

gage in its socket, and further turning be prevented.

My invention will be found also to be very useful with horses who carry their heads to one side, as it will keep them square without any trouble.

Towholly uncheck the horse the reins must be tightened, with the hands held in such position that the sockets A will be below the line drawn from the bitto the drivers hands, when the bulbs B will rise into the open part 0 of the terret, and the horse will be at liberty to put his head down or turn it from side to side.

In turning, the rein on the side toward which the turn is to be made should be drawn, with the bulb on the other 'rein remaining in the socket, as in this way the horse will be prevented from making the turn too short.

I am aware that heretofore a bulb has been used on a check-rein, with a socket in the water-hook and an attached cord to operate the device running back to the driver, and I do not claim such device, as it is not adjustable, as mine is, being arbitrarily limited by being at the end of the check-rein, and does not prevent'the horse from throwing his head from side to side.
