Description

llnitcrt gister;
EDWARD Il. WELBOURN, .0F-v UNION CITY, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 108,418, (mail cantera, 1810.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLAR FASTENlNGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. VVELBOURN, of Union City, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful improvements in Horse-Collar Fasteniugs; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enablel others skilled in the art to f make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming partot' this speeltication.
This invention relates to improvements in fastenings for horse-collars of the character of the fastcnings for which a patent was granted to I). C. lVcstiall, October' 1, 1867, No. (39,520; and the invention consists in an i mprovement which will be tirst described and then clearly pointed out in thc claim.
1. Figure 1 is a perspective view ot' the socketed part of the fastening for one part ot' the collar;
Figure .aisa perspective view of the part oi' the fastening for the other part of the collar;
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation of iig. 1; and
Figure 1 is a section ot' both parts joined together.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspoinling parts.
These i'astenings consist mainly in two inet-al parts, having two sockets for the reception of the ends of the two, parts of the collar, the ends of one part having sockets for the reception ot'uotched projections on the other part, and being provided with a catch for engaging the said notched projections for fastening vthe ends of the collar together.
A represents one of the said socketed fastenings, and B the other.
rIhey are made ot' cast metal in any suitable way, and `have ears or plates, c, on the opposite sides of the ends, in which the sockets are made projecting beyond, i'or securely attaching to the collars, the ends of which arc received in the sockets.
The said collars terminate at the lower eudsin two points, side by side, which these sockets D E are suitably arranged to receive; but hitherto, although one of the points of the collar is smaller than the other, both the sockets have been made the same size, which requires unnecessary fitting of the points of the collar, or one of them, to the sockets. This I propose to avoid by making both sockets of the right size for their respective parts.
I propose, also, to arrange the notch F of one projection G on the lower side thereof, and the notch I of the projection H on the upper side, and to fasten them, when received in their respective sockets L M, by means oi' thc double-acting lever `or catch-bar N, pivoted at O in the bottom ofthe sockets E D, which communicate with each other thereat.
The part ot' this catch N which is in the socket E is made larger than lthe other part, so as to overbah ance it, and a hole is made through its center for the projection H to pass throngh,a11d the lighter end rises up into the notch F of the other projection. The object of this arrangement isA to prevent the fastenings from tilting, so as to open at one side, as
l they do when the notches of both studs are inthe same sides, as they have heretofore been made.
rlhis catch-lever is raised by a tongue, R, for disconnecting the two parte.
I propose, also, to introduce a plate, P, iu the bottom ot' the fastening A, above the catch-lever, as shown, to prevent the said lever from heilig obstructed in any way by the ends of the collar coming against it.
Instead of attaching these fastenings tothe ends oi' the collar by means of, wood screws, as heretofore, I propose to employ rivets of wire, which are to be used in connection with the bars Q, which have ears for the purpose.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The notched projections F G, H I, corresponding sockets L M, and the* double-acting overbalanced catch-bar N, combined in a tubular `collar fastening, as and for the purpose described.
EDWARD L. WELBOURN.
W itnesses:
THoMAs Mc Manos, J. It. Jackson.
