" nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE SMITH, OF OASTILE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-TUES- Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 1 32,495, dated October 22, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. SMITH, of Oastile, in the county of Wyoming and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Tub; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a buttertub, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section, of my butter-tub; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the handles; Fig. 4 is a section through one side of the handle, showing its attachment to the tub and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of one of the cross-bars on the lid of the tub.
A represents the tub proper, made in any of the known and usual ways, and provided with metal handles B B. These handles are constructed in the form shown in Fig. 3, and provided on the inner side with a lug, a, on each arm of the handle, which lugs are embedded in the wood of the tub, and the handles fastened by the upper hoop 0 being placed rabbet or shoulder is secured a rubberring,
b, to exclude the air.- Across the center of the lid D is laid a bar, E, the ends of which pass under and through the handles B B. In the center of the under side of this bar is inlaid a metal bar, 01, with a nut formed in the center. Through the bar E and through the nut in the bar dis then passed a screw, G, the end of which bears against a plate, 6, attached to the top of the lid, and by means of said screw the lidD is tightened, and by unscrewing said screw the lid can readily be removed at will. Across the lid D are also placed two other bars or cleats. J J, provided in their up-. per sides with curved recesses or grooves h h, in which the lower edges of another tub may be placed to keep the same from slipping off.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The handles B B provided with lugs to a, and held on the tub A by means of the notched hoop G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the thumb-screw G andnut d embedded in the bar E, the handles B B, tub A, and lid D, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
,3. The combination of the tub A, having handles B B and hoop O, with the lid D, rabbeted and provided with the ring b, bar E with screw G, and bars J J with grooves h h, all constructed as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of May, 1872.
GEORGE SMITH. Witnesses:
DAVID SHUMUsK, ANsoN HOWARD.
