Description

JESSE V. OLDAKER, or ATLANTA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT m DOOR-MATS.
Qpecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,897, dated July 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JESSE V. OLDAKER, of Atlanta, in the county of Logan and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Mats; and do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference 'bein g had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a door-mat, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in whichi Figure 1 represents a side view of my doormat, and Fig. 2 a sectional view of the same.
A represents a common board, of any suitable dimensions, provided near one end with a scraper, B. Fromthe other end of the board A, for a suitable length, are laid a number of bars, 0 O, crosswise on the board, and firmly secured to the same, forming spaces or grooves between. them. Husks D D are laid across each space or groove thus formed, and a bar, E, in the center across the husks. This bar E is then, with the husks, pressed down between the stationary bars 0 U, and the ends of the bar E fastened by straps a a to the edges of the board A. One of these straps or is fastened to each end of the bar E, and iu.the1ower end of the strap is a slit, as shown, to pass over the head of a screw-pin or nail, b, inserted in the edge of the board. By thus fastening the bars E E the husks D D, or rather the ends thereof, are left standing in an upright position, jammed in between the bars 0 G and E E, and when said ends are trimmed off they form a good and serviceable door-mat. Around the edges of the mat thus formed are secured cleats G Gr to improve its appearance and hide the bars 0 E. \Nhen the husks are worn out the cleats can be taken off and the bars E E unhooked, so as to remove the old husks and substitute new.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the board A, scraper'B, stationary bars G, husks D, removable bars E, fastened by hooks b and straps a, and the exterior cleats G, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of January, 1872.
JESSE V. OLDAKEB.
