SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,893, dated June 6, 1882.

hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear,

and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efticient gigsaddle. To this end it consists in certain improvements in the construction'and arrange ment of parts. 7

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved gig-saddle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line w m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4

is a cross-section on the line 3 y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is across-section on the line 2 2, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail view, in perspective, of the metallic saddletree detached, and Fig. 7 is alike view of the housing detached.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the A-shaped metallic plate forming the cross-tree, and having longitudinal slots or recesses B B, one at each end, spanned by bridges or supports-C O, the latter being at the ends of the cross-tree. The edges of the latter are provided with a row of small perforations, D, by which the overturned edges of the pads or cushions E E, covering the under sideot the cross-tree, may be tacked thereto, as shown. I

F F designate the skirts, each of which is out in a single piece, which are securedat their upper ends to the end bridges, G, of the crosstree by screws G or in any other suitable manner. The housing H is fitted over the cross-tree and extends also over the inner ends of skirts F F. It is provided at its ends with longitudinal slots 1 I, which are covered by flaps or jockeys J J, secured to the housing.

K K are screws passinglone at each side) through the ends of jockeys J J ,housing H, skirts F F, and into the bridges O to hold these parts in position and firmly together.

L L designate the billets, each being cut from a single piece of leather and having their upper ends, M, inserted between the ends of the housing and jockeys, and screws K K, the latter serving to retain them in position, then passed down through slots II to the bridges O of the cross-tree, to which they are A secured by the screw-threaded bolts or shanks N of the terret-rings O O, which pass through jockeys J J, housing H, billets L L, and into openings 1? in the bridges G, as shown.

Q designates the metallic saddle, which is secured to the crosstree by a large-headed bolt or screw, R, passing up through a slot, S, in the housing and plate A. The check-hook T is secured to the saddle Q by a screw U or in any other manner.

The advantages of my invention are obvious. It can be manufactured at a small cost, and, when finished, forms a neat, attractive, and comfortable saddle. The different parts can be readilyseparated or removed, so that others may be substituted, and can be secured together with great facility.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. .The combination, with the cross-tree having bridges or supports '0 O, and housing H, having slots I I,-covered by flaps or jockeys J J, of the separate billets passing under the jockeys through slots I I and restin g on bridges O G, in which position they are secured, as set forth.

2. The combination, with the cross -tree having bridges or supports 0 0, housing H, having slots I I, covered by flaps or jockeys J J, and separate billets having their inner ends resting on bridges O G, of the terret-rin gs having their screw-threaded" bolts or shanks passing down through the jockeys, housing, billets, and bridges, as set forth.

3. The combination, with the cross-tree, to the ends of which are secured the skirts and the housing having the flaps or jockeys, of the screws K K, passing through the ends thereof and into the cross-tree, as set forth.
