WOODEN MAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,215, dated December 17, 1889.

Application filed June 7, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY C. BAILEY, of Edinburg, county of Johnson, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vooden Mats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.

My invention consists in the construction of mats or similar articles from wooden blanks, and will be understood from the following description.

In the drawings, Figure l is a top view of a door-mat constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig.2 is a similar view of the blank itself as it comes from the saw. Fig. 3 is a section on the line y y, Fig. 1.

In detail, I) represents the blank just as it comes from the saws, made from a piece of thin stuif about an inch thick and five or six inches wide, preferably of hickory. It is placed under a series of thin saws and slits s 8', cut in it in the manner shown in Fig. 2, every alternate slit .9 stopping short of the ends, and the other one 3' cut through at the ends, leaving an unsawed space in the middle. The ends are then preferably tongued, as shown in Fig. 3, or dovetailed, and end pieces 6, having grooves corresponding to the shape of the tongue or dovetailed, are slid on the ends of the strips, and a hole is bored through the center along the line of the solid partof the blank. The material is then opened in the saw-cuts in the manner shown in Fig. 1 and a rod passed through the hole in the center and tacked where the rod passes through each strip, as shown at a, Fig. 1. The grooved pieces 6 are fastened upon the ends by small nails driven through at each strip, and the manufacture is completed, with the exception of staining or painting, which Serial No. 313,526. may be done in the ordinary way. The mat is elastic, and when the end pieces and central rod are removed it will spring back'in the position shown in Fig. 2.

By my method of construction door-mats, stair-treads, and a variety of similar articles are readily manufactured, and when made of hickory or tough fibrous material they will last a long time without renewing. They are light, easily handled, easily cleaned, and for many purposes are greatly superior to any similar device made of metal.

Instead of the continuous rod 1', distanceblocks may be interposed between the adjacent strips, keeping them apart; but the rod is preferable.

What I claim as my, invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:

1. The elastic blank'b, having slits 5 cut through the center and not through the ends, and alternate slits 3 cut through the ends and not through the center, substantially as shown and described.

2. A door-mat its body portion formed of an elastic blank having the slits 3 cut through the center and not through the ends, the alternate slits .9 out through the ends and not through the center, such blank expanded and its ends secured by end pieces e, substantially as shown and described.

3. A door-mat composed of an elastic body I), sawed or cut in the lines 8 s, as shown, its ends secured by pieces 6, and secured at and through its center by a rod 7, substantially as shown and described.
