Letters Patent No. 66,925, dated July 16, 1867.
FRUIT-BOXES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
' Beit known that I, WILLIAM R. WILCOX, of Saint Joseph, in tne county of Berrien, and State ofrMiehigan, have invented a new and improved Fruit-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to ya new' and useful improvement in that class of fruit-boxes which are constructed of thin strips or veneers of wood, the sides oi' the box being composed of a single strip.
The invention consists in a novel manner of inserting and securing the bottom of the box in the body thereof, and in an improved mode of securing' the lapped end to 4one ofthe sides ofthe box,Y as hereinafter fully shown and described. In the accompanying sheet of drawings` Figures l and 2 are side views of my invention.
Figure 3, a vertical section of the same, taken in the line x x, fig. 1.
Figure 4, a horizontal section ofthe same, taken in the line g/ y, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the body of the box, composed of four sides, and eut of a single strip or veneer of wood, the bends or angles of which are readily formed by cutting or groovin-g the strip or veneer as shown at a in fig. '4, the groove being in the inner sides ofthe angles or corners. The strip or veneer is of such a length as to admit of one end, B, overlapping one of the sides of the box, and this end B is cut or chamfered atits upper and lower edges to form a V, with a rectangular termination, b, and this termination is also grooved a short distance from its end to admit of it being passed through'a, slot, c, cut through the sides of the box. The other en d of the strip or veneer is cut so as to have a tenon, d, to pass through a mortise in the sides of the box near the groove a, which admits of the end B being turned or bent over the adjoining side. The bottom C ofthe box is formed of a thin wooden strip, having tenons 'e on two opposite sides to fit into mortises made in the opposite sides of the body A, the bottom C being a short distance above the lower edge of the body A, so that it will not come in contact with the surface on which the box stands, and be thereby protected from injury. If necessary or desired the tenons e of the bottom C of the box, as ,Well as the tenon d, at the end of' one side of the termination b, may be secured by glue or any proper cement in their respectivemortises.
I do not claim constructing fruit-boxes of a single strip or veener of wood, grooved as shown and described, to admit of the'strip or veneer being bent to form the sides of the box, for that has been previously done; but I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.A The securing and Asupporting the ends of the box by means of the bent end b, fitting into the slot c, and the tenon d itting into the slot in the corner ofthe box, substantially as herein shown and described for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the above I claim the bottom O, substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM R.'WILooX.
