WILLIAM BAUM,A OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 99,522, dated Febr-awry 8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOORING.
The Schedule referred to in these `Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom tt 'may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BAUM, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Flooring for Houses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a' full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved flooring. 4 v
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A
This invention has for its object to'cons'truct a Wooden door for rooms, halls-,r&c., which can be made of broad boards, and without the use of nails, and which will not be liable to warp or expand.
The invention consists in the use of grooved and tongued rails, attached, respectively, to the beams and tothe under sides ofthe boards. These rails lock Y the boards at several places firmly to the beams, and
pte-vent eli'ectually every displacemant of the same.
The boards can be made of common pine wood, and of great width, and will still be as durable and proper The saving of labor, and material produced by using the broad boards is very considerable, and exceeds by i'ar the outlay for the rails.
A A, in the drawing, are the beams which support the flooring-boards.
B B are the boards, laid at right angles to the beams, upon. the same.
To the faces oi' some or all oi' the beams are secured, by means of glue or otherwise, grooved rails C To the under sides of the boards are secured transverse rails D D, which are, by dovetail ribs at a, fitted into corresponding grooves ofthe boards, as shown.
The rails D have tongues or ribs b, which fit into the grooves of the rails C. The boards are thus firmly secured to the beams, and cannot shrink.
The rails D may be arranged separately for the several boards, or one may be secured to two or three ad-l joining boards, as shown at B1 B", in fig. 2.
'lhe joints between the several boards may be. closed by narrow laths c c, glued to the under sides of the boards.
It is evident that the rails O may as well betongued, and those l) grooved, instead of having the tongues on D.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The transverse rails D, secured to the under sides of the flooring-boards, in combination with the rails C on the beams, all arranged as described, to hold theV boards in place, as specified.
' l WILLIAM BAUM.
