Description

N. FEI'ERS. FHOTO-UTMOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
A. E. COLMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED SCRUBBlNG-BRUSH.
Specification forming'part of Letters Patent No. 83,932, dated November 10, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, A. E. COLMAN, of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved ScrubbingBrush; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and marks thereon, which said drawings form part of this specication and represent a brush made under my invention- Figure l being a bottom view thereof, and Fig. 2 being a view, by transverse section, of the same.
In both of these figures like parts are indicated by like marks and letters.
This brush is made up of rows of bristles and strips or bars of india-rubber, of vulcanized india-rubber, or gutta-percha. The brush here showlras three rows of bristles, a c a, and two strips of rubber, b b, alternating with the bristles.
As is evident, the number of rows of bristles and of strips of rubber may be greater than here shown, and, instead of running length. wise, may run erosswise, or be placed in other or more fanciful forms.
The strips of rubber are here shown attached to strips of wood, which are fitted into grooves in the bottom slab of the brush, the attachment of the rubber strip to the strip of wood being by glue or cement; but other suitable methods of iitting the one to the other, or of fitting the rubber to the wooden part of the brush, may be adopted.
The brush composed of bristles and rubber will be more durable and effective than a brush made of bristles only, especially brushes in tended for heavy or rough work.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the brush made up of bristles and rubber, substantially as herein recited, and for the purposes set forth.
This specification signed this 24th day of January, 1868.
A. E. COLMAN.
