SADDLE-TREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,114, dated. January 31, 1882.
Application filed November ll, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN SEDLAoEK, of Troy, in the county of Lincoln and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saddle-Trees, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in riding-saddle trees; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a saddle-tree of the improved construction, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same partially broken away at the upper side.
In the construction of the saddle-tree I use sole or skirting leather, which is first cut in suitable shape and then molded to the form of the saddletree by pressure in any suitable manner.
a a are the thicknesses of the leather saddle-tree, two or more, attached together at their edges by rivets or by sewing.
bis a strip of metal secured between the two thicknesses of leather by rivets at the forward portion or poinmel of the saddle-tree. This strip is bent in proper shape. before being applied, and is of a length to extend to near the bottom of the flanks at each side, so that it serves to retain the saddle tree in shape while allowing it to yield slightly.
0 care metal strips, also scoured between the (Model) two thicknesses of leather, and having loops at d secured to their ends for connection of the stirrup-leathers and girthstIaps. The advantage of this construction is that the saddle-tree is flexible and yields easily to the motion of the horse as well as tothe position of the rider. The saddle-tree also presents an unbroken up per surface, it will keep its shape, and will not chafe nor hurt the animals back.
I am aware that a saddle provided with a tree composed wholly of leather struck up or molded into form and stiffened by braces of thick leather in front and rear, so as to render both these parts inflexible, has heretofore been employed, and I therefore lay no claim -to such construction, which differs from my invention, in that I dispense entirely with the rear brace or stay and render the rear portion of my tree flexible, which in the construction disclaimed is inflexible, in order to conform with the back of the horse and the seat of the rider, and also render the construction cheaper by dispensing with the rear brace or stay.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A saddle'tree made of two or more thicknesses of leather molded into the form of a saddle and secured together, and provided with the front stay, b,insert-ed and secured between the layers of the leather, substantially as described.
MARTIN SEDLAOEK.
