Description
UNITED STATES THOMAS J SHEEARS, OF YPSILANTI,
MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF HIS RIGHT TO BENJAMIN F. POTTER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,955, dated Jul)1` 15, 1873; applieationvfiled June 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. SEEEARs, of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a bed-bottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my bedbottom; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section through` one end of the same.
A represents Aa frame, of any suitable dimensions, and a bar, B, made stationary in the frame. This bar may be round, square, or any other suitable shape, and is bisected longitudinally in two equal parts, which are firmly united together by screws a a. Between these two parts thus firmly united are clamped the ends of a series of ,strong belts, C C, made of rubber, leather, or other suitable material, and the other ends of said belts are firmly attached toa roller, D, pivoted in the side pieces of the frame'A at the opposite end thereof. Across the belts C O are placed a series of other belts, O C', of rubber, leather, or other suitable material. These cross-belts are riveted to the belt C on each side of the frame, and areV slitted for the passage of the intermediate belts O, substantially in the manner shown in Fig. l, thus interlacing or interweaving the belts. of the roller D is a ratchet-wheel, b, with a pawl, d, pivoted to the side of the frame A, to work in said wheel. In the roller D are made holes for the insertion of a short lever, G, by means of which the roller is turned to stretch 'the bed-bottom to any desired degree.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A bed-bottom formed of belts O C and ranged, as described, within a frame A, as.
set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. g
THOMAS'J. SHEEARS.
