IMPROVEMENT IN FURNITURE-SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,048, dated February 3, 1874; application tiled November 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. DoREMUs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furniture-Springs, of which the following is a specification:
Figure lis a detail longitudinal section of my improved spring, shown as applied to the seat and pedestal of a chair. Fig. 2 is a detail cross-section of the same taken through the line x Fig. l.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved spring for chairs, cradles, cribs, and other articles requiring a rocking or oscillating motion, and which shall be simple in construction, and readily adj usted to have a greater or less strength, as may be required. rIhe invention consists in the arched or bowed and slotted plates or straps, in combination with 'one or more elastic blocks and one or more bolts, and in the combination of one or more plates, two or more elastic blocks, and the bowed or arched and slotted straps or plates, as hereinafter fully described.
A and B are two straps or plates, which are made with a bow or arch in their middle parts, and are designed to be attached to the seat and pedestal of a chair, as shown in Fig. l, or to the parts of the other article to which the spring is to be applied. C D E are three blocks, made of rubber or other elastic material. The block D is interposed between the bows of the straps or plates A B. The block C is placed within the bow of plate A, and the block. E is placed within the bow of the plate B. Upon the outer sides of the blocks C E, respectively, are placed plates F G. Through the middle parts of the blocks C D E and the plates A B F Gis placed a bolt, H. Across the ends of the blocks C D E, through holes in the end parts of the plates F G, and through slots in the bends of the bows of the plates A B, are passed bolts I J, as shown in the drawings. By adjusting the nuts ofthe bolts H I J, the tension or strength 0f the spring may be regulated at will; and by tightening some of said nuts more than others, the spring may be adjusted to have more or less elasticity in either direction. One, two, or three of the bolts H I J may be used, as may blocks C D E, as may be desired; but I prefer to use the three blocks, because it prevents occur when a single large block is used. The
or some of them of metal and some of wood, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.The arched or bowed and slotted plates or straps A B, in combinationv with one or more elastic blocks, C D E, and one or more bolts, H I J, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of one or more plates, F G, with one or more bolts, H I J, two or more elastic blocks, C D E, and the bowed or arched straps or plates A B, substantially as herein shown and described.
