Application January 14, 1955, Serial No. 481,765 2 Claims. (Cl. 132-762) The present invention relates to a manicuring instrument.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a manicuring instrument and a holder to function as the handle of the instrument.

Another object of the present invention is to provide means for restraining the sliding movement of the manicuring instrument with respect to the holder.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, durable, and compact nail file and holder which may be conveniently carried in the pocket or in ladies handbags.

These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of the present invention showing the nail file partly extended;

Figure 2 is a vertical view in cross section on line 2-2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is an end view in cross section on line 3-3 of Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a partial view, greatly enlarged, and in cross section, taken on line 44 of Figure 3; and

Figure 5 is an isometric view of one end of the nail file of the present invention.

Referring in greater detail to the drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the present invention consists of a manicuring instrument consisting of a holder in the form of a comb body and a nail file 11. A recess 12 is arranged longitudinally within the head of the comb body 10 and extends inwardly from the end 13 to a point spaced from the other end 14 of the comb body 10.

A longitudinally arranged slot 15 is formed in one face of the comb body 10 through which extends the one leg 16 of a spring clip 17 having its other leg 18 positioned substantially parallel with the comb body 10 with its ball end 19 spaced from the one face of the comb body 10. The one leg 16 of the spring clip 17 is secured to the end 20 of the nail file 11 within the recess 12.

The leg 16 of the spring clip 17 projects from the one face of the nail file 11, the same face having an outwardly projecting boss 21 arranged transversely of the nail file 11. The inner wall of the recess 12 is formed with a plurality of spaced transversely arranged recesses 22 disposed longitudinally along the wall 23 and into which is engageably received the boss 21 in a number of extended and retracted positions of the nail file 11. A spring strip 24, having an undulating or serpentine shape, is disposed within the recess 12 and biases the nail file toward the wall 23 of the recess 12.

The end of the leg 16 of the spring clip 17 extends through an aperture or slot 25 in the end 20 of the nail file 11 and is secured there by spot welding or other means. Comb teeth 26 projecting from the head of the comb body 10 complete the combination comb and nail file, the comb body forming a holder and a handle for the nail file whenever its boss 21 is received within the appropriate recwses 22 for partially or fully extended positioning of the nail file.

The ball end 19 and the other leg 18 ofthe spring clip are adapted to overlie the free end of a pocket or other fabric or support and when so lying over such a free end, grippingly engage the free end and further restrain the movement of the boss 21 out of whatever one of the recesses 22 in which it is received.

The spring clip 17 further forms a means by which the nail file 11. is readily extended from the recess 12, a thumb or finger upon the spring clip being able to press the nail file inwardly to flatten out the spring strip 24 sufficiently so that the boss 21 will leave the recess in which it is engaged.

The nail file 11 has a file cut or knurled surface as indicated by the reference numeral 27 in Figures 1, 4, and 5.

In use, the manicuring instrument of the present invention may be carried in a pocket with the long leg of the spring clip extending over and embracingly engaging the free edge portion of the pocket. In this position, the resilient spring clip exerts a pressure on the nail file within the holder to cause the boss to be retained in the selected one of the other recesses 22. This prevents the nail file from being accidentally projected out of the holder while within the pocket or pocket book, or purse, where its sharp point might inflict damage or penetrate the lining of the pocket or purse.

The spring clip forms a means by which pressure of the finger on the spring clip will compress the spring 24, flattening it out slightly, to permit the boss 21 to be moved from one recess to a selected one of the other recesses to project the nail file from the nested position within the holder to a partially or fully extended position.

What is claimed is:

1. A manicuring instrument comprising a holder having a recess arranged longitudinally of said holder and extending inwardly from one end to a point spaced from the other end, said holder having a slot arranged longitudinally in one face of said holder connected in communication with said recess, a nail file normally nested within said recess and connected to said holder for movement from the nested position out of said one end of said holder to a projected position, hand operable means exteriorly of said holder and operatively connected to said nail file for efiecting the movement of the latter, said means having a portion extending through said slot, said holder being provided with a plurality of other recesses arranged in spaced longitudinal relation in one wall of said recess, a boss on said nail file projecting from one face thereof engageably received in any one of said other recesses for holding said nail file in any one of its partially or wholly projected positions, and a spring strip of serpentine shape in said one recess biasing said nail file toward said one wall of said one recess.

A manicuring instrument comprising a holder having a recess arranged longitudinally of said holder and extending inwardly from one end to a point spaced from the other end, said holder having a slot arranged longitudinally in one face of said holder connected in communication with said recess, a nail file normally nested within said recess and connected to said holder for movement from the nested position to a projected position out of said one end of said holder, hand operable means exteriorly of said holder and operatively connected to said nail file for effecting the movement of the latter, said means having a portion extending through said slot, said holder being provided with a plurality of other recesses arranged in spaced longitudinal relation in one wall of said recess,
