6, i I y MW l GEORGE STEPANCHAK, OF FARRELL, PENNSYLVANIA.
cHALK-HOLDER.
Application filed May 3, 1918.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE STEPANCHAK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Farrell, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cl1alkIIolders, of which the following is a specication.
The primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of a -ready means for holding chalk especially adapted for use in the schoolroom for preventing the chalk from soiling the fingers of the user, the chalk being readily adjustable for exposing a desirable quantity thereof for. use upon theV writing surface.
A further object of the device is to provide a combined-handle and holderv for a piece of chalk whereby the chalk may be completely inclosed when not desired for use, and automatically projected with a suitable portion thereof exposed for writing purposes whenever desired.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a holding handle'for chalk and crayons which is easy and inexpensive to manufacture adapted for rendering the operation of writing and drawing more cleanly to the child or person employing the device.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device;
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line III-III of Fig. 1 with the chalk in its retained position;
Fig. 4 is a similar view with the chalk partially released; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the chalkcontrolling means employed with the device.
It is well known that the employment of chalk and crayons in the schoolroom is unsanitary because a large number of pupils employ the same piece of writing material as well as the fact that particles of the chalk or crayon often soil the hands and clothing of the pupils. My invention is designed for rendering the use Vof chalk and crayons more sanitary in writing or drawing upon blackboards or other surfaces and mainly consists of a tubular handle 10 into which Speeication of Letters Patent.

pusher disk or plate 15 adapted to seat Vagainst the base or inner end of the chalk 11 as best illustrated in Fig. of the draw- A controller 16 is provided for regulating the movements of the chalk 11, being in the form of a plate having a spring-- hinge connection 17 with spaced struckup ears 18 provided on ther-side of the handle 10 while a bent end yor linger 19 projects through a transverse slot 20 in the holder for engagin the toothed arcuate end 21 with the chal 11. In this manner, the linger 19 retains the chalk 11 at any desired adjustment while slight pressure exerted upon the free end portion 22 of the controller 16 releases the chalk 11, permitting the spring 13 to force the chalk outwardly of the handle end 12. It will be seen that by releasing the controller 16, the chalk 11 may be pushed entirely into the handle 10 for safe keeping ready to be automatically projected for use by the spring 13 whenever desired.
A ring or strap 23 is carried by the controller finger 19 servingas a brake for the chalk 11 which is extended therethrough. The inner periphery of the strap 23 is provided with a roughened or toothed portion 24 adapted for engaging the chalk 11 when the controllerv end 22 is depressed to the required extent.
The chalk 11 is normally maintained in its adjusted position by the'force of the spring connection 17 engaging the nger end 21 with the chalk, and when it is desired to extend the chalk 11 a greater distance outwardly of the handle 10, the controller portion 22 is depressed, permitting the spring 13 to force the chalk outwardly while the movements of the chalk are controlled by the engagement of the strap teeth 24 with the piece of chalk. In this manner, the chalk may be entirely inclosed in the handle 10 when not in use and by manipulating the controller 16 the chalk will be automatically fed outwardly of the handle as the same may be needed and as the writing end 25 of the chalk becomes worn away.
The open end 12 of the holder is preferably slightly contracted as herein sho'wn and it will be evident that the entire piece of chalk 11 may be readily withdrawn from the holder when desired and at which time the disk 15 will be forced by means of the spring 13 into contact with the finger 19 and. strap 23. A new piece of chalk ymay then be 'readily inserted through the handle end 12 and the disk 15 depressed to the required extent while the chalk will be maintained in position for writing by the controller 16. The device can also be disassembled by removing the cap 14 which has a roughened linger hold surface 26 upon its periphery.
The entire device is formed of any suitable metal such as aluminum and' is light in weight so that the chalk when inclosed 'therein may be'carried'in the pocket if dethe inner end of the chalk, an expelling spring for the chalk arranged between said cap and pusher, the said holder having a transverse slot spaced from its open end, a controller upon said holder having a toothed finger positioned through said slot in normal retaining engagement with the chalk, spring hinge connections between the said controller and holder, and a brake strap carried by the finger encircling the chalk with the toothed inner periphery adapted for engaging the chalk when the chalk is released from the said finger.
2. A chalk holder comprising a tubular handle, a piece of chalk longitudinally slidably arranged therein, automatic projecting means for the chalk, a spring-pressed retainer for the chalk pivoted to the said handle, and a brake. strap encircling the chalk carried by the retainer adapted for regulating the outward movement of the chalk under the influence of said projecting means.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
