citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and" Improved Pen or Pencil Holding Device, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has reference to improvements in that class of pen or pencil holding devices adapted to hold the writing element on one of the fingers of the hand and in such manner that the writing element is handy when it is to be used, and is out of the way when not in use and does not interfere with the hand or fingers for other than writing uses.

Primarily, my invention has for its object to provide an improved device of the character stated, very simple and inexpensive in construction, that can be readily placed on any of the fingers of either hand to hold the pen or pencil in a way to relieve the fingers of the steady strain caused by holding the pen or pencil too tightly while using it, and which prevents displacement and loss of the writing element and allows for the quick insertion or removal of such element from the holder, as desired.

Another and essential object of my invention is to provide a device for the purpose described that is shaped up from a single piece of resilient material in the form of an open hand ring having sufficient reslliency whereby to fit and hold tightly on any finger of the hand to which it may be applied and which has an integral spring member with which the pencil or pen holder slidably engages and which clasps the said writing element under sufficient tension to prevent its becoming easily disconnected from the holder.

With other objects in view that will hereinafter be apparent my invention embodies, in a pen or pencil holding device of the kind stated, the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts thereo as will be fully explained in the following detailed description, specifically pointed out 1n the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the embodiment of my invention as in use, the dotted lines indicating the device and the pencil when adjusted to a position out of use.

In the practical development of my invention, the device consists of a ring shaped flat band of suitable flexible or resilient material, which band is preferably a split ring so that it may be readily placed and by its any o1 the fingers of or" preeither hand.

In the preferred form of my invention, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the flat hand ring 1 is split and at one end has a keeper 2 that is disposed crosswise of the band and into which the pen or pencil holder is received when the device is applied for use.

The keeper 2, in the form of my invention shown in Fig. 2, is in the nature of aspiral coil that is bent up from a strip of metal 10 which is left on one of the split ends of the band as the latter is punched out, the said strip, in practice, being bent around, in any suitable manner, to produce the laterally ex tended coil shaped keeper 2, the latter, as well. as all of the keepers 2 in the several modified forms of my invention to be prosently explained, being disposed at an incline to the cross section of the ring to provide for the required inclination of the pen or pencil holder when using the same as is indicated in Fig. 1.

In Fig; 8, it is shown that instead of forming the coil shaped keeper 2 from an extension at one end of the pen, as in Fig. 2, the band is cut lengthwise. the cut extend- .ing some distance around the band and ending near one oi its ends.

The strip 20, formed by making the cut in the band stated, is pulled outwardly toward the band end and then is manipulated, in any suitable way to form the coil 20 which is bent and extendedlaterally of the ring band in position for slidably receiving therethrough the pen or pencil holder.

From the foregoing descriptiomrtaken in connection with the drawing, the complete construction, the manner of its use and the advantages of my invention will be readily apparent to those familiar with the use of devices of this kind, it being obvious that in all of the different forms of my invention, as shown, the ring band, when the pencil is to be held on the hand, but out of position for use, need only be turned around the finger to bring the keeper 2 in such position that the pen or pencil is held along the back of the finger and out of the Way of using the said finger for other purposes, as is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

1. A device of the character stated comprising a ring band, provided With a strip extendin in the direction ,of its length adapted for being shaped into a'coil and projected laterally of theband for receiving and sustaining a pen or pencil.

2. A device or the character stated comprising a ring band slitted in the direction of its length whereby to form an elongated or pencil holder consisting of a split hand ring, the band having a strip bendable therefrom, the said strip being coiled to form a loop for receiving a pen or pencil and extended laterally from the band and diagonally With respect to the said ring band.
