UTILITY AND SPECTACLE CASE Filed Sept. 15, 1950 INVENTOR.
flariha K Cramer WMW Patented Sept. 15, 195 3 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
UTILITY AND SPECTACLE CASE Martha K. Cramer, New York, N. Y.
Application September 15, 1950, Serial No. 185,134
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to ladies handbags and utility cases and, more specifically to a combined utility and spectacle case construction which is an improvement over the construction disclosed by my Patent No. 2,458,567, dated January 11, 1949.
One object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is well adapted for being made by inexpensive mass production processes in that it requires only three seams or the like for connectin edges of a sheet folded in the manner described hereinafter.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is light in weight, and simple and inexpensive, but which is also of a pleasing outer appearance, sturdy, durable and well adapted for withstanding the rough usage to which devices of this type frequently are subjected.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing a preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the same;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Figure 2; and,
Figure 5 is a reduced plan view of a sheet of material of which the device can be made.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing the numeral 2 is a portion of a sheet of pliable material, such as fabric material, leather, silk, rubberized fabric, plastic material or the like, which initially lies in the same plane as a portion 4. The portions 2 and 4 may be separate sheets, but I prefer to make them as a unit of one rectangular sheet as previously referred to.
A flap 6, which is provided with a snap fastener part 8, or with any other suitable fastening means, is extended from a longitudinal edge of the portion 4, and on the portion 2 there is a snap fastener part II] or the like adapted for engaging the part 8.
The portion 2 is subdivided into a pair of longitudinal sections, section l2 of which has a narrow outer edge section l4. A flap I6 is extended from that outer edge of the portion 4 which is rightangularly disposed to the edge on which flap 6 is formed and is provided with a fastener part 18, which is adapted for engaging a fastener part 20 on the section l2. The latter has in one of its narrow edge portions a recess 22.
The flap 6 is foldable along a folding line 24, and the longitudinal sections of the portion 2 are foldable along a folding line 26.
In making my new and improved case, I prefer to cut a blank as described above and as illustrated in Figure 5. I fold the portion 4 along a folding line 28 upon one of the longitudinal sections of the portion 2, so that said last mentioned section is adjacent one side of the portion 4. Then I fold the other longitudinal section I2 along the folding line 26 upon the other side of the section 4, so that the latter is intermediate the two sections of portion 2, which has been folded along the folding line 26 (Figures 3 and 4). That edge of the section 12 which is opposite the recess 22 is secured to the portion 4 by means of a row of stitches 30 or the like (Figures 1, 2 and 4). With the portion 4 thus interposed between the longitudinal sections of the portion 2, the flap I6 can be folded on the line 32, so that the part I8 can engage the part 20.
That edge of one of the longitudinal sections of the portion 2 which is opposite the folding line 28 is secured by means of a row of stitches 34 or the like to that portion of the sheet 2 which is adjacent the folding line 32 when the sheet has, been folded in the manner previously described... Furthermore, the section [4 is folded back along; the folding line 36 and is secured to the portion, 4 by means of a row of stitches 38 or the like (Fig-.
ure3).
Thus by means of only three rows of stitches,v 3|], 34 and 38, the sheet is firmly held together in the folded condition, so as to form a case which.
has a utility compartment 40 and a separate spec-- tacle compartment 42 (Figures 3 and 4). The: compartment 40 can be closed by means of the: flap 6, and the compartment 42 can be closed by means of the flap l6.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claim is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A combination utility and spectacle case comprising a sheet of pliable material having two portions the first of which in unfolded position forms a continuation of the second portion and lies in the same plane as the second portion, said first portion being L-shaped and having its extremities formed as flap sections, while the second portion is divided by a longitudinal folding line into two longitudinal sections, said first portion being folded upon one longitudinal section of said second portion so as to be parallel thereto, and the other longitudinal section of said second portion being folded upon said first portion, so that the latter is located between the two longitudinal sections of said second portion, two edges of that section of the second portion which is folded upon said first portion being secured to said first portion, and one edge of that section of the second portion upon which said first portion is folded being secured to said first portion.
