6 Claims.
The present invention relates to pocket combs.
The primary object of the invention is to pro- A still further object ofthe invention is to pro I Vide a pocket comb of the above-'mentioned type having a retractable nail le concealed in the back of the comb so that the device may be used for cleaning. the finger nails when the comb is not being used.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a comb with a tooth confining case having means for limiting the sliding motion of the case with respect to the comb so that the case will not become detached from the comb and lost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description of the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention illustrating the comb case in its retracted position with the teeth projected;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the comb showing the coniining case in its projected position;
. Figure 3 is a top elevational view illustratingl the manner in which the nail iile is sheathed in the back edge of the comb;
Figure 4 isan end elevational view illustrating the bridge connection between the side walls of the comb case and showing the comb case in .its retracted position;
Figure 5 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, illustrating the manner in which the inturned edges of the comb case embrace the top edge of the comb to retain the casein its retracted position;
\ Figure 6 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 1, looking in the'direction of the arrows, illustrating the groove in the rear wall of the comb for receiving the nail file; and Figure '7 is a vertical cross-sectional view 'taken on line 1 1 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, showing the comb casein its projected position to confine the teeth of the comb.
In the drawing,l wherein for the purpose of illustrating the invention and wherein like reference characters will be employed to designate like parts throughout the same, the reference character I0 will generally be employed to designate a comb back having lformed integral therewith a series of comb teeth II.
The comb back is provided with a longitudinal slot I2 on its rear` edge to form a sheet for a folding nail le I3 pivoted at one end of the comb by means of a rivet or the like I4, anchored in a suitable opening in one end of the comb.
lBetween the comb back and teeth II there is formed a longitudinal groove I5 on each side of the comb which grooves terminate at the ends in elongated notches I6. The elongated notches I5 are provided with shoulders I'I` at the upper end thereof and the notches I6 continue ldownwardly along the end teeth II and terminate in shoulders I8.v
The comb case comprises a pair of side walls I9, the lower edges of which converge inwardly as at 20 to embrace the upper ends of the teeth II adjacent the groove I5. The side walls are connected by longitudinal bottom wall 2| having a series of openings 22 indirect alignment with the teeth I I whereby the teeth may project therethrough as shown in Figure 1 when the comb is The end portions of the side walls I9 are connected by bridge walls 23 and said bridge walls 23 are adapted to ride in the notches I6 formed at the ends of the comb. The side walls are curved at their ends as at 24 to provide a finished appearance and to coincide with the curved end walls 25 of the comb back- I0.
Formed on the upper'marginal edges of the comb case I9 are` inwardly directed bead portions 26 which are adapted to embrace :the upper edge of the comb back I0 when the case is in its retracted position. When the case is in 'its projected position as shown in Figure 2, the inwardly directed beads 26 snap into the longitudinal grooves I5, between the comb back and teeth and thereby retain the comb case in position as shown in Figure 2 so that the teeth of the comb will be confined and protected.
Knurled portions 21 may be formed at each the top Walls thereof so thatthe combmay begrasped between the-thumb and foreiinger.
The lower portion ofthe comb case I9 may have its ends; rounded as at 29 similar to the rounded portion 2l so that the end teeth Il will vform a continuation or a substantially unbroken wall with the lower'edge bottom wall 2| of the Y comb case.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be V'taken as the preferred embodiment of the same and that various changesin the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim: l 1. In a comb and case, a comb, a case slidable transversely of the comb in the plane thereof for exposing and concealing the teeth of the comb, means carried by the ends of the case and the ends of the comb for limiting movements4 of the case on the comb and cooperative means on shoulders on the end teeth andA ends of the comb back and a bridgepiece on each end. of the case cooperating with said abutment shoulders.v
3. A comb and case as set forth in claim 1, wherein the means for holding the case inrv adjusted positions includes the provision of a longitudinally extending groove on each side of the back of the comb adjacent the teeth and anges carried by the free edges of the sides of the case receivable in the grooves when the case incloses the comb teeth and said anges adapted to extend over the free edge of the back Aof the comb when the caseis moved on the comb to expose the teeth.
4.1A comb and case as set forth in claim 1, wherein the means for limiting the movements of the case on the comb includes abutment shoulders on the end teeth and ends oi' the comb back and a bridge piece on each end of the case cooperating with said abutment shoulders, the means for holding the case in adjusted position including the provision of a longitudinally exaaeopos tending groove on. each Aside of the back of the comb adjacent the teeth flanges carried by the free edges of the 'sides of the case receivable in the grooves when tbe case' incloses the comb teeth and said anges adapted to extend over the free edge of the back of the-comb when the case is moved on thecomb to expose the teeth.
5. In a comb and case, a comb having a back 'and teeth; a 'case sndable transversely or the comb forselectively exposing and concealing the teeth thereof, said .case being of U-shape in cross-section providing resilient side walls and a perforated bottom wall for the passage of the comb teeth, a bridge piece extending between the side walls of each end of the case and spaced abutment 4shoulders on each end of the comb adapted to be engaged by said bridge-pieces for limiting movements of the case on the comb for exposingand concealing the comb teeth, andl cooperating means carried bythe comb and case for holding the case in adjusted positions on the comb.
6. In a comb and case, a-"comb having a back and teeth, a case slidable transversely oigthe comb for selectively exposing and concealing the teeth thereof, said case being 'of U-shape in cross-section providing resilient'side walls and a perforated bottom wall for the passage of the comb teeth, a bridge piece extending between the side walls of each end of the case and spacedv abutment shoulders on each endof the comb adapted to be engagedl by said bridge pieces for limiting movements of the case on the comb for exposing and concealing the comb teeth, cooperating means carried by the comband case for holding the case in adjusted positions on the comb, including inwardly directed anges on the free edges of the side walls of the case adapted to overlie the upper edge of the comb back when thecase is in adjusted position to expose the comb teeth, and said comb having a longitudinally extending groove in each side thereof adapted to receive and retain said iianges when the` case is in adjusted position concealing theV
