Description

ZAQLYBB E. M. MORIN Dec. 2@, Wil-H COMB Filed Sept. 25, 1946 INVEN TOR.
Patented Dec. 20, 1949 COMB Edmund M. Morin, Providence, R. I., assignor to Felmore Company, Inc., a corporation of Rhode Island Application September 25, 1946, Serial No. 699,189
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a toilet article such as a comb.
Combs are frequently carried in the pocket of the user or in the pocketbook of a lady for fixing the hair when the same has become mussed-up or dislodged from a desired position. Frequently a nail file is also carried on the person for cleaning the nails or filing the nails in order that the hands may be more presentable. Attempts have been made to combine these articles into one unit and, at the same time, ornament the comb.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a very compact construction which will provide both a comb and a nail file.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple but effective assembly of the two articles with a minimum of expense in operation.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple but effective means of holding the nail file in position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple but extremely effective way of holding an ornamental cap on the back of the comb.
Another object of this invention is to provide an ornamental cap which will serve not only to ornament the comb but also will assist in holding the nail file in position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the comb assembly;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an exploded view illustrating the comb, cap and nail file in the relative position in which they are located when in assembled position.
In proceeding with this invention I provide a comb of non-metallic material having a back with teeth extending from one edge thereof. The opposite edge of this back is slotted and I provide a metallic cap over the back and this slotted edge to provide a housing for a nail file which may be slid into this slot from one end thereof. The cap is secured to the comb by projections or fingers which extend into slots in the back of the comb. The nail file is held in position by having protuberances or bulges on the end adjacent the entrance end of the slot to engage the cap and also the bottom of slot to exert sufficient friction on the two so as to maintain the flle in assembled position.
With reference to the drawings, I0 designates generally the comb member having a back H with teeth l2 extending from one edge thereof. Recesses l3 are provided in the opposite faces I4 of the back and a longitudinal slot [5 extends from one end is of the comb lengthwise of the back but terminating in an upsweep of its bottom wall as at I? short of the opposite end 18 of the member.
A cap designated generally 20 comprises a top wall 2| with opposite flanges 22 extending therefrom. These flanges are bent together to close one end 23 while at the other end there is a slot 24 extending inwardly from the lower edge of the cap upwardly to a point as at 25 short of the top wall 2|. Fingers 26 are provided on the flange 22 at spaced points therealong so as to enter the recesses l 3 in the member or back It.
The cap 20 is assembled with the member ID by positioning this cap over the back and slot and forcing the fingers 26 into the recesses [3 in the back of the comb. This holds this cap firmly on the back I 4.
A nail file 30 has a body portion 3| pointed as at 32 at one end while its opposite end is provided with a flange or abutment 33 which acts as a handle. This handle is curved on its inner surface 34 so as to fit about the curved end of the cap. Projections 35 extend oppositely from the nail file 30 at its end adjacent the flange 33 and are of a dimension so as to engage the bottom 36 of the slot l5 and also the underside of the top wall 2| of the cap. The upper of these projections engages within the lip or edge 25 at the upper end of the slot 24 so as to catch thereunder and additionally hold the nail file in position.
In inserting the nail file, the flange 33 engages the end of the cap to limit the insertion of the file and to also position the projections 35 in the desired position or frictional locking engagement with the cap.
I claim:
1. A comb comprising a member having a back with teeth extending therefrom, said back being provided with recesses along its face, a cap comprising a top wall with flanges extending therefrom to extend along the edge opposite the teeth and along the opposite faces of the back, and fingers on said flanges to extend into said recesses and hold the cap in position on said member, said back being provided with a longitudinal slot between its two opposite faces to receive a nail file in said slot and said cap having a slotted end in registration with said slot in the comb back.
2. A comb as set forth in claim 1 wherein said member is nonmetallic and said cap is metallic. EDMUND M. MORIN.
