COMBINATION COMB AND CLEANER Filed Jan. 5, 1944 lu u u /7' f w 6 4 /5 J5 4 1 /,e I J roe/r man/J9:
/5 z /5 g a m Patented Feb. 20, 1945 UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION COMB A D CLEANER Joseph W. Brockman, Sr., Leavenworth, Kans. Application January 5, 1944, Serial No. 517,083
1 Claim. I (Cl. 132-28) This invention relates to a combination comb and cleaner and it aims to provide an exceedingly simple construction wherein the cleaner will be held in place on the comb by a, slight grip or clasp action.
It is also aimed to provide such a structure wherein the cleaning will be effected automatically through the relative movement or application of the cleaner to and from the comb, and the structure is such that a comb may be accommodated having both fine and coarse teeth or tines.
It is still further aimed to provide a structure wherein the cleaner may be made in a single piece and'the same, as well as the comb, molded, formed, or otherwise manufactured, from plastic, rubber, ivory, or anyequivalent material.
Still further, it is aimed to provide a structure wherein the cleaner may have a clip either on one or both ends to enable it to be clasped to the pocket or article of clothing.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing-,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly broken away to disclose details, showing the comb and cleaner in detached relation;
Figure 2 is a partial longitudinal sectional view through the cleaner in connection with a fragment of the combin place therein;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the parts of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, the invention is adapted to be used in combination with a comb such as is generally shown at 10, and which may be made from any suitable material such as plastic, rubber, ivory, metal, or the like.
This comb has fine tines at H and preferably coarser tines at l2, although the tines may be similar if desired.
In accordance with the invention, said comb is adapted to be carried in a. cleaner structure,
which is generally designated I3 and preferably capable .of manufacture in a single piece-from plastic, rubber, ivory, or any equivalent material. This cleaner for the most part is U-shaped in cross section, having a bottom wall at M in conformity with the inner edge of the back I5 of the comb, and having spaced side walls at l5a, unconnected at the top. The trough-like body is closed at the ends by walls l6 which are continued to provide tines I! at opposite ends which serve as guards for the tines II and I2.
The wall M has perforations or slots 18 therethrough of a size to receive the tines II and I2 and aligned with respect thereto. Thus it will be seen that the comb l0 may be engaged with the cleaner as in Figure 2 and in applying and sliding the tines H and [2 in the slots l8, that the tines will be automatically cleaned.
Attention is called to the fact that the walls I5a are slightly closer together at their upper or. free edges than at their bases, where connected to the walls l4 so that they will exert a clasp or gripping action onto the back l5 of the comb, preventing accidental detachment of thecomb and cleaner.
If desired, at either-end of the cleaner, I may secure a clip l9, to enable the cleaner to be fastened in the pocket of an article of clothing or otherwise in the same manner as a pencil or pen, such clip being secured to the cleaner as by a rivet at 20.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I'claim as my invention:
In combination with a comb having a back and tines extending therefrom, a cleaner detachably slidable by movement transversely relatively to the comb, said cleaner including a trough-like portion to receive said back, and said portion having slots in the base thereof through which the said tines pass and in which they are slidable for cleaning, the trough like body being constricted at its entrance so that it willhave a clasp retaining action on the comb, and reinforcing tines at the ends of the trough-like portion extending above and below said base closing the portion and protecting the said comb tines.
