COMB
Filed March 14, 1946 INVENTOR lfW/J M 5/54 ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 17, 1950 Lewis .llBil, Newton Highlands,Mass. Y Application March 14, 1946,-'Se'rial No. 654,252
.1 This invention relates to combs, especially of the pocket type.
More particularly, the invention deals with a comb structure wherein one end portion of the plastic or other material is extended to form a pointed fingernail cleaning and treating element. Still more particularly, the invention deals with a comb in which the heavy walled back member of the comb includes a file insert, preferably extending longitudinally of the outer curved edge of the back of the comb. The novel features of the invention, will be best understood from the following description when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed, and in which the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view partly in section of a comb made according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
It has been the custom for men and women to carry in the pocket or purse, a comb for combing the hair, and at the same time, to carry a file for trimming, cleaning or otherwise caring for the nails of the fingers of a hand, especially in sprucing up for any occasion.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide in one device, an article serving both functions, thereby eliminating the need of carrying two independent articles, and further dispensing with the carrying of the objectionable article, namely the file, which is injurious, particularly to a pocket, and will invariably form a hole in the pocket.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown an adaptation of my invention, and at I is shown a comb composed of rubber compositions, plastics and similar materials. At II is shown the elongated and preferably rounded back of the comb body, which back terminates in downwardly curved end portions I2 and I3. Between the end portions l2 and I3, and extending from the back I I, are a series of comb teeth I4, which may be of any desired structure, as in other devices of this type and kind.
The comb back I I may be said to be longitudinally curved and has a more or less transversely rounded upper edge portion I5, which edge portion has within end limits of the back II a recess IS in which is disposed a longitudinally curved file element H, the cutter, teeth or edge I8 of which is preferably disposed within the normal rounded edge I5, and in fact, the upper edges of the side walls of the recess are slightly rounded,
2Claims. (o1, 132 +764f f as seen at I9, so asto guide the nail of a-finger to the cutter edge II! of the file I'I.
. In production, the back I l'may be molded with the recess I6 therein, after which the file I! may be cemented or otherwise secured in position. On the other hand, and as is known in the art, the file Il may be formed as an insert in casting the comb body.
Extending integrally from the back II at the end I2, and also integral with said end I2 is a nail treating element 20, upper and lower edges 2| and 22 of which converge outwardly to form a more or less pointed end 23 and the side surfaces 24 and 25 of the element 20 are also converged to the pointed end 23, as seen in Fig. 2 0f the drawmg.
The element 20 provides means for cleaning under the fingernails, and also means for removing free cuticles or in setting or otherwise trimming the cuticles, and this element in conjunction with the file I'I, provides a simple and practical means for performing normal manicuring operations in preparing'the hands, and simultaneously in the operation of combing the hair on occasions for sprucing up, particularly before meal times.
By extending the element 20 outwardly beyond the end I2 of the comb, this element is free for performing the operations above indicated in a simple and effective manner. At the same time, this element will not in any way interfere with the normal use of the comb and in carrying the comb in the pocket, the end portion l3 being placed downwardly, thus preventing injury to the pocket.
It will also be apparent that the protruding rounded edges I9 also form guards for the cutter edge I8 of the file I! so that the file will not be injurious to the pocket in placing the comb in and removing the same from the pocket. On the other hand, these protruding edges act as guides in directing the nails to the roughened or cutter surface I8 of the file. At the same time, the edges I9 provide guards which will prevent injury to the fingers beneath the nail in the filing operation.
By conforming the cutter edge I8 to the longitudinally rounded back edge I5 of the comb, the file can be conveniently and practically used in trimming the fingernails, particularly in trimming side corner portions of the nails, as will be apparent.
It will also be noted from a consideration of Fig. l of the drawing that the outer edge of the element 20 is formed continuous with the curved 3 edge l5 which keeps the element 20 well within the environment of the comb body especially with respect to the widest dimensions of the body.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
