RECEPTACLE OR THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES HERBERT E. BOUGHTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles or the Like, of which the following is a description.

My invention belongs to that class of devices known as receptacles or the like and is particularly designed as a handy pocket receptacle for postage stamps, small photographs, court plaster or any other desired article and is especially adapted to be manufactured and vended for souvenir or advertising use.

My invention has for its objects the production of a convenient, efficient and attractive device of the kind described.

To this end my invention consists in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure l is a sectional view of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the same taken substantially on the same line. Fig. t is an enlarged transverse sectional view of a slightly modified form, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of said modified form.

Referring to the drawings, l is a body part preferably made of an integral piece of material and provided with a recess 2 therein. The body part may be made of any suitable or desired material such as wood, rubber, metal or composition, the preferred material being wood. A cover 3 made of any suitable material preferably metal, such' as sterling silver or the like, is pivotally secured to the body part l and adapted to cover the recess 2 therein. In the preferred construction a shoulder 5 is provided within the recess 2 substantially proximate to the face of the body part, upon which the cover 3 may seat when closed.

Any suitable means may be employed to normally keep the cover in its closed position. As shown resilient means is arranged within the recess, the preferred construction comprising a spring 6. Asis most Specification of Letters Patent.

clearly shown in Fig. 4f, the cover 3 is provided with lugs or hinge members 7 on the underside thereof through which pass pin 4 which secures the cover 3 to the body part. Any other equivalent means suitable for the purpose may be employed to secure the cover to the body part and the hinge mem ber 7 may be made integral with the cover, or separate therefrom and secured thereto in any suitable manner. If desired the recess 2 may extend under the face of the body part, that is it may be undercut as shown at 8, giving a more neatly finished product when the cover is closed.

To open the receptacle, pressure at the end 9 of the cover 3 with the thumb or finger nail will raise the cover in a position substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The spring may be arranged if so `desired so that the cover when wide open will remain in that position, or so that the spring tends to normally keep the cover in its .closed position irrespective of how wide it 1s open.

The form shown in Fig. 5 is substantially similar except that there are two covers one on each side of the body part, and the undercut portion S is omitted. In this form there may be a central partition 11 if the same is desired.

Any suitable design such as a monogram, word, emblem or picture, etc., may be engraved on the cover 3, ifv desired. When the design is arranged on the cover similar to that shown in Fig. l and the body part grooved as at 10-10 etc., the receptacle has the appearance of a picture and frame.

Having thus described my invention it is obvious that various material modifications may be made in the design, arrangement or combination of parts herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact design and arrangement shown.
